Woodville Plantation, Bridgeville, will host a Stoolball Game from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 4. Join historic interpreters in the 18th century game of stoolball, the forerunner of modern baseball. Stoolball was enjoyed by both men and women, the gentry and working classes, and was even played by General Washington and his troops during the American Revolution.
Admission to the grounds and museum is $5 for adults, $3 for kids age 6-12, and free for kids under age 6.

Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) South Campus Theatre, West Mifflin, presents the Tony award-winning musical “Fiddler on the Roof” at 8 p.m. Aug. 1-3 and 9-10. The production also includes a 2 p.m. matinee performance on Aug. 11.
Set in Tsarist Russia in the early 20th century, “Fiddler on the Roof” follows the compelling personal journey of a Jewish patriarch as he struggles to maintain his family ties and cultural and religious traditions amid an atmosphere of social upheaval and religious persecution.

The Heritage Players will hold auditions for the musical “Oliver!” at 7 p.m. Aug. 3-4 at the Schoolhouse Arts Center, Bethel Park. Seeking ages 10 and up. Relay For Life of Peters Township will host Relay’s Got Talent from 3-5 p.m. Aug. 3 at Peters Township High School. Judging will be by a panel of local celebrities and prizes will be awarded following the competition.
The theme is Carnival for Relay for Life of Peters Township and activities begin at noon Aug. 3 at the high school with an opening ceremony. There will be live music, carnival-style family-friendly games and festival foods.
The luminaria ceremony, which honors survivors and those who lost their battle with cancer, begins at 9 p.m. Luminaria may be purchased at the luminaria tent the day of the relay for $10. Pinwheels that can hold up to six names honoring or remembering someone affected by cancer are available in advance at the luminaria tent for $20.

An Eighteenth Century Flax to Linen Fest will be held at the historic Oliver Miller Homestead in South Park from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Aug. 11. See the processing of flax to linen from harvesting to rippling, retting, breaking, scutching, hackling, spinning and being woven into cloth on the loom.
All of these steps – from the flax growing in the field to the sewing of a petticoat can be viewed at the Oliver Miller Homestead.
• Frontier Frolic – Learn the practical as well as the lighter side of pioneer life in the late days of summer on Aug. 25. Participate in games such as sack races, Garden Varmint Toss, Table Top 9 Pines, Put ‘n Take, Shove ‘Ha Penny and an early version of horseshoes. Young people may participate in a picture scavenger hunt when they will search out various articles on the site and will be rewarded with a treat.
The associates, in period dress, will also conduct tours of the stone house, the springhouse, the log house, the forge, demonstration shed and the barn, and will present ongoing demonstrations of spinning, weaving, quilting, open hearth cooking, blacksmith work and the use of hand tools to make everyday items. The Oliver Miller Homestead, a historic landmark and Whiskey Rebellion site, is located on Stone Manse Drive, just off the circle in South Park.

The Western Pennsylvania Division of The Salvation Army announces its fifth annual “Most Amazing Race” on Sept. 21. The “Most Amazing Race” combines physical, mental and creative challenges that propel participants to act outside their comfort zone. Beginning at Station Square, contestants will converge all over the city in an effort to win part of a $5,000 prize package.
“Our goal is to raise funds and awareness for youth programs in Allegheny County,” said Major Mark Mackneer, The Salvation Army’s Allegheny county coordinator.
This year, The Salvation Army is accepting 50 teams of two people, who must raise a minimum of $250 in order to qualify for the race. Only the top 50 fundraising teams will be accepted into the race. A total prize purse of $5,000 will be awarded, with the first place team earning $3,000; second place earning $1,500; and third place earning $500. The top five teams that raise the most money will be rewarded with valuable prize packages, including tickets to sporting and cultural events, restaurant and retail gift cards, hotel packages and more.
Teams will start with a clue leading them to a specific location and follow subsequent clues until the end of the race, using an approved transportation mode or their own two feet to get from place to place. Participants are required to complete challenges, some physical, some mental, and some silly, in order to receive the next clue.

To focus attention on the ugly and avoidable environmental problem of litter, the Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) sponsors its 28th annual Lens on Litter Photo Contest, with a deadline of Oct. 31. Use your camera to identify the worst examples of litter in your Pennsylvania community. The contest is open to amateur photographers only. Contestants will be divided into two classes – school age children and adults. Eight prizes, four to each group, will be awarded with first place winners receiving $1,000 in cash, second place $500, third place $250 and The People’s Choice Award of a camera. The contest identifies sites, which PRC then targets for clean up through local action – be it the governing body or civic-minded organizations. In the past five years, litter has been removed from more than 300 sites.

All entries must contain the following information on the back of the photo: entrant’s name, address, telephone number, title given to photo, and location of litter site.
