Registration is currently open for The Art Institute of Pittsburgh’s Summer Studio, June 18-22.

Summer Studio puts students in a hands-on, collaborative environment, where they learn new skills in the fields of design, culinary, media arts or fashion.

The five-day summer program is open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors and offers workshops in a wide variety of areas. Under the direction of Art Institute of Pittsburgh instructors, students will work on real-world projects and use professional-grade tools and technology to see if a creative college like The Art Institute of Pittsburgh is right for them.

Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation is accepting applications for scholarships for the year 2013-14. At least one parent must be of Hispanic ancestry and at least one grandparent must be Hispanic.

Seventeen Bethel Park High School (BPHS) Latin students were inducted into the 2012-2013 National Junior Classical League Honor Society.

Seniors Stephen Barnhart, Julianna Buchwald, Erin Hedglen, Jamie Lucarelli and Dan Snyder; juniors Jarrod Cingel, Emily Davidson and Olivia Dowd received inductions. Sophomores Aaron Coplan, Maura Ellsworth, Adithya Krishnachand, Emily Marzina, Adam Musciano, Keith Powell, Olivia Schank, Vincent Tavoletti and Elizabeth Wustin were also inducted.

To be accepted into the Junior Classical League Honor Society, students must be Junior Classical League members in at least their sophomore year, have studied at least two years of Latin, maintained a 90 perent grade point average and demonstrated good character.

The five seniors wore an honor cord at graduation, identifying them as members of the 2012-13 National Junior Classical League Honor Society.

Ellen Conrad, the BPHS Latin teacher, taught the students.

(PIX)The winner of this year’s Lt. Terrence Mulkeen Memorial Award is Tyler Roth of Mt. Lebanon, son of Leah Roth and Ryan Estabrook and a recent graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School. Tyler will attend and play football at Princeton University.

The $6,000 award is given annually in memory of Lt. Terry Mulkeen, a Navy pilot, who was killed in a training accident in 1991. He was a 1977 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School and the award was established by his classmates.

Bethel Park High School (BPHS) English teacher Charles Youngs is currently serving as a member of the Carnegie International’s 2013 Teacher Advisory Board for the Carnegie Museum of Art.

He is one of eight area teachers who collaborate with the Museum’s Education Department and the Exhibition’s Curators to develop educational programming for school visits to the famed exhibition, which will open Oct. 5 and run through March 16, 2014.

Youngs last served in this capacity in 2008 and annually organizes the BPHS student field trips to the Museum that are related to the English/language arts curriculum.

Zach Strennen, son of Jerry and Lorie Strennen of McMurray, has been selected to participate in the C-MITES Summer Program for academically talented students. Zach will attend the Robotics Programming and Design class held at Carnegie Mellon University June 17-21. He is a sixth grade student at McMurray Elementary School in the Peters Township School District.

Four members of the Bethel Park High School Forensic Team were named Academic All-Americans by the National Forensic League: seniors Madeline Balzarini, Julianna Buchwald and Shannon Fagan, and junior Jarrod Cingel.

To qualify as an Academic All-American, the students had to earn the minimum Degree of Superior Distinction (750+ speaking points) from the National Forensic League, maintain a cumulative, non-weighted QPA of 3.8 or higher and score a minimum combined score of 2,000 on the SAT.

Madeline, Julianna and Jarrod earned Degrees of Outstanding Distinction (1,000+ speaking points) and Shannon earned the Degree of Premier Distinction (1,500+ speaking points), which is the highest honor bestowed by the National Forensics League.

The students are coached by Forensics Team Sponsor Alice Ursin.

Canon-McMillan High School’s annual scholarship banquet honored 128 students at the Southpointe Hilton Garden Inn recently. A total of $4.13 million was awarded by colleges and universities, independent companies and organizations and the Community Scholarship Foundation of Canon-McMillan (CSFCM).

Top winners included the recipients of full-tuition scholarships: Connor Schram, Stanford University; Alex Campbell, Colgate University; Kevin Freeman, Northeastern University; Katina Landgraff, Youngstown State University; Jennie Brancho, Kent State University; and Dan Hansen, Gannon University. Other top recipients were Michael Burchesky, Hamilton College, and Jeffrey Mack, University of Alabama.

Megan Jones was awarded the first national award for service through the CSFCM’s parent organization, Dollars for Scholars. Big winners from the CSFCM were Chad Lani, who received the $5,000 ANSYS scholarship; and Jacob Cadez and Gilbert Lehotsky, who each received $2,500 from Aquatech. North Strabane Township graciously funded $1,000 scholarships to each of 10 students this year.

The Canon-McMillan High School Counseling Department coordinates this annual event to recognize the hard work and accomplishments of Canon-McMillan’s outstanding students.
