From woodlands strewn with beer cans to creeks pockmarked with tires, litter is a blight on Pennsylvania’s landscape. To focus attention on this ugly and avoidable environmental problem, the Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) sponsors its 28th annual Lens On Litter Photo Contest, with a deadline of Oct. 31. Use your camera to identify the worst examples of litter in your Pennsylvania community. The contest is open to amateur photographers only. Contestants will be divided into two classes – school age children and adults. Eight prizes, four to each group, will be awarded, with first place winners receiving $1,000 in cash, second place $500, third place $250 and The People’s Choice Award of a camera. The contest identifies sites, which PRC then targets for clean up through local action – be it the governing body or civic-minded organizations. In the past five years, litter has been removed from more than 300 sites.
Send entries (limit three per person) to the Pennsylvania Resources Council, 3606 Providence Road, Newtown Square, PA 19073. All entries must contain the following information on the back of the photo: entrant’s name, address, telephone number, title given to photo, and location of litter site. If a school age child, the school grade and school name must be provided. Photos will not be returned and will become the property of PRC.
For more information, call Pennsylvania Resources Council at 610-353-1555.
The ToonSeum, Pittsburgh’s Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, will exhibit seven decades’ worth of original art from cartooning’s highest honor, The Reuben Award. The exhibit runs through August 11.
This is the first time in the organization’s history that original art from these legendary artists has been assembled in one exhibition. Rare works seldom seen by the public from artists such as Gary Larson of Far Side, Charles M. Schulz of Peanuts, and many more will be displayed.
• Partnering with 16 cartoonists and 15 organizations, the ToonSeum has created “Oakland,” a new visitors guide featuring short comic vignettes of great Oakland venues, including The Original Hot Dog Shop, Phipps Conservatory and the Cathedral of Learning. It is free to the public.
On June 14, at 7 p.m., there will be a celebration of its release, hosted by the Phantom of the Attic Comics. Copies of both “Oakland” will be available, as will a specialty print of the double page spread of “Phantom of the Attic” by Marcel Walker, which appears in the book. Many of the artists will be on hand for autographs.

On the weekend of July 12-14, local filmmakers can compete in the Seventh annual 48 Hour Film Project for a chance to win big.
At 6 p.m. July 12, filmmakers will meet at Chatham University in the Eddy Theater, where they will be given a genre, a character, a prop and a line of dialogue that they must work into the short film. The teams will have to return to the same spot on July 14 no later than 7:30 p.m.
The films will premiere July 20 at the Hollywood Theater. The films are shown in three screening groups between 1-8 p.m. Specific screening group information will be posted after films are turned in. Each screening group is completely different.
There will be 17 distinct honors awarded by the panel of celebrity judges. The winning films will be screened and be presented with their awards on July 28 at the Hollywood Theater. The list of judges will be announced in June.
The Pittsburgh Best Film is awarded a trophy, is screened at the 48 HFP Filmapalooza, and receives cash plus prizes supplied by local sponsors like Pittsburgh Trophy, Specter Studios and Most Wanted Fine Art. The film will then be in the running for top honors for Filmapalooza, the 48 Hour Film Projects annual awards. The Grand Prize winner of Filmapalooza receives $3,000 cash, filmmaking equipment and the Grand Prize trophy.
The top 12 international 48 HFP films will be screened at the Cannes Short Film Corner in 2014.
