Veteran Cecil Township police Chief John T. Pushak was placed on paid administrative leave Monday pending the audit of a police department account.

Township supervisors unanimously approved the move at their monthly meeting. They also authorized the hiring of independent legal counsel Phillip Binotto and two auditors to conduct the investigation.

Pushak, who joined the police force in 1974, is fully cooperating, said township solicitor John Smith. Smith said the action was the result of two executive sessions held by the supervisors last week. The first session was held Feb. 27 in Smith’s law office; the second session was held March 1 at the township building.

Smith declined further comment and said supervisors were asked to do the same.

Results of the audit are expected within two weeks. The auditors from Cypher & Cypher will report to special counsel after reviewing the account.

Smith said Pushak was placed on leave to avoid any accusation that he had access to account files during the audit.
