Hollywood Theater announces May line-up
Film buffs, look no further than The Hollywood Theater in Dormont for the first glimpse of the latest releases. With its new series Hollywood Previews, offered through Gathr Films, sneak previews of first-run movies will be shown ahead of their New York and Los Angeles theatrical openings. Moviegoers who want to see several movies in a month can sign up at gathr.us/series/dormont-previews for a membership that costs $19/month or $49/three months, which will save several dollars off the regular box office price. Single movies are the regular $7 ticket price. May Hollywood Previews movies are:
• “The Deep,” 7:30 p.m. May 8 – Baltasar Kormakur’s “The Deep” (Djúpið) is a movie based on a real incident in Iceland in which a small fishing boat sank outside the Westman Islands in the middle of winter. The film tells the story of the lone survivor and how he spent hours in the freezing cold sea and managed to swim to safety.
• “Ain’t In It For My Health: A Film About Levon Helm,” 7:30 p.m. May 16 – Director Jacob Hatley’s intimate documentary finds Helm at home in Woodstock, N.Y., in the midst of creating his first studio album in 25 years. Shot during the course of more than two years, the film focuses in on the four-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member after his 2007 comeback album, “Dirt Farmer,” brought him back to the spotlight.
• “What Maisie Knew,” 7:30 p.m. May 23 — A contemporary re-imagining of Henry James’ novel, “What Maisie Knew,” starring Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan, tells the story of a captivating little girl’s struggle for grace in the midst of her parents’ bitter custody battle. Told through the eyes of the title’s heroine, Maisie navigates ever-widening turmoil with a 6-year-old’s innocence, charm and generosity of spirit.
• “100 Bloody Acres,” 7:30 p.m. May 30 – In this 2012 Australian comedy horror film, Reg and Lindsay run an organic fertilizer business. They need a fresh supply of their “secret ingredient” to process through the meat grinder. They’re not psycho killers, just small business operators.
Breakfast and a Movie returns for a special Mother’s Day brunch May 12 with the 1958 Rosalind Russell movie “Auntie Mame.” Kelly James, formerly of Sugar Café, will cater. The light breakfast begins at 11 and the movie starts at 11:30. Tickets are $15 at the theater during regular operating hours and at www.showclix.com/events/breakfastandamoviemay2013. Tickets for the movie only are $7 at the door. “Auntie Mame” will screen again 2 p.m. May 16 as part of the Hollywood’s monthly Senior Movie Matinee. Tickets are $5 for all.
• Pig’s Blood Prom takes place May 10, with a special screening of Brian DePalma’s classic film “Carrie.” The movie begins at 8 p.m., followed by a performance by Venus in Furs featuring the Bridge City Bombshells Burlesque Troupe. Tickets are $10 www.showclix.com/event/pigsbloodprom. Carrie will screen again at 9:15 p.m. May 11.
• “It’s a Disaster,” 4 and 7 p.m. May 11 and 7 p.m. May 12. “It’s a Disaster” is a dark comedy in which eight friends meet for their monthly “couples brunch,” but what starts as an impromptu therapy session/airing of domestic grievances takes a sudden, catastrophic turn when the city falls victim to a mysterious attack. Trapped in the house and unsure of their fates, these seemingly normal people become increasingly unhinged to hilarious, surprising and revealing results.
• In honor of Mother’s Day, the Hollywood brings you the worst mother ever. The Hollywood’s So Bad It’s Good series presents Faye Dunaway’s over-the-top portrayal of Joan Crawford in “Mommie Dearest” (1981). Fred and Will provide live comedy heckling at 7:30 p.m. May 9. The film screens again at 4 p.m. on Mother’s Day, May 12.
• The stellar new vampire film “Kiss of the Damned” (2013) will screen at 7 and 9:15 p.m. May 17; 10 p.m. May 18; and 7 p.m. May 19.
•At 7 p.m. May 18, “Marko Friday Night,” a sneak preview of a hilarious local indie film written and directed by Ben Dietels, will be shown.

• The Cinosam Club of Mt. Washington brings A Night at the Movies with the great W.C. Fields, 7:35 p.m. May 20. Fields classics “It’s A Gift” and “Man on the Flying Trapeze” will show along with cartoon. Doors open at 7 p.m. and tickets are $6.
• Support local independent cinema with the Screen and Be Seen series at 7:30 p.m. May 21, featuring “Let It Rip.” The mockumentary takes audiences on a journey through the grounds of Wheeler College of Albany, a school founded by the inventor of toilet paper, Zeth Wheeler. The college is anything but a normal collegiate institution, and it is the epitome of the saying, “Wheeler College of Albany has a history of failure, and that history just got a little bit longer.” Tickets are $5.
• Zombo Presents… returns May 24 with “The Wild World of Hasil Adkins” (1993), a short subject documentary by Julien Nitzberg about the legendary “psychobilly” musician and infamous wild man Hasil Adkins, with a rare 7 p.m. live performance of the Hillbilly Varmints. Tickets are $7.
• The Hollywood’s May raffle winner selected the comedy “Bob and Doug McKenzie: Strange Brew” (1983). Canada’s most famous hosers get jobs at the Elsinore Brewery, only to learn that something is rotten there. The film will preview at 8 p.m. May 25. Doors open at 7 for a beer tasting. Every month, the Hollywood raffles off a chance to select a movie. Winners get the balcony reserved for them and 10 friends with free concessions. Tickets are $2.
• Kick off summer with the Memorial Day weekend showing of Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster “Jaws” starring Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss. “Jaws” will be shown at 4 p.m. May 25, and 4 and 7 p.m., May 26.
• “Stolen Seas,” a documentary from Thymaya Payne, presents a chilling exploration of the Somali pirate phenomenon and forces you to rethink everything you thought you knew about pirates, 7 p.m. May 31. Visit www.stolenseas.com.
