Peters exploring recycling options

2 min read

With the garbage contract soon to expire in Peters Township, council is exploring ways to reduce the costs to residents including applying for a state grant to help defray the cost of new recycling containers that are picked up by an automated truck not to be touched by human hands, to insure safety.

Council authorized applying for the state Department of Environmental Protection grant for two items, both associated with recycling during a May 28 meeting.

One part of the grant is for the purchase of a cardboard compactor that would be located in the township, where businesses and individuals could dispose of unwanted cardboard. The machine, estimated to cost about $30,000, would be self-operated. Funding would be 90 percent through the state grant, and 10 percent from township funds.

As for the wheeled recycling carts, the cost is $50 per cart, with a lifetime expectancy of 10 years. The one displayed to council May 28 was 65 gallons, which some on council felt was too large.

“I can’t figure how this thing will fit in my garage,” said Councilman David Ball.

The township’s current contract calls for recycling pick up each week, along with garbage.

In other action, council:

• Learned of meetings held with property owners on Jones Drive concerning the future of the narrow street and whether the township would assume maintenance.

• Heard that Peters Creek Sanitary Authority recently switched to a fiscal year to coincide with the Clairton Sanitary Authority that processes sewage from Peters Creek. There will be a rate increase for users in the Peters Creek area, but the amount is not known.

• Approved a proposal from Traffic Planning & Design Inc. to prepare project submittal for the state Transportation Improvement Program. The two projects are intersection projects at Valley Brook at Bebout roads, and Bebout at McMurray roads. The cost is not to exceed $5,000.

• A special permit was granted to Levin Furniture for a tent sale from June 7-16.
