The Bethel Park Town Hall Speaker Series will be held at 7:45 p.m. Nov. 20 at the community center on Park Avenue. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald will speak.
• The annual tree lighting ceremony will be held at 6:45 p.m. Dec. 4 in the multipurpose room of the Community Center.
• The Bethel Park Police Department is organizing the Adopt-A-Family program that seeks sponsors to help local families that need assistance providing Christmas presents and food for their family. In most cases, the families that are helped had an unusual hardship or circumstance during the year.
Police will provide information about a family with their wish list. In some cases, police will combine sponsors to help lessen the burden. Suggestions include providing gift cards for local supermarkets.
The program is anonymous. If there is a family that needs a sponsor, contact Officer Tom Rigatti at trigatti@bethelparkpolice.net, or call 412-831-6800 ext. 104. Anyone wishing to make a donation can send a check made payable to Bethel Park Police Pals with Adopt-A-Family in the memo line.
Canonsburg
Open burning is permitted 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays, through April 30. The final leaf pick up will be held Nov. 23. Leaves must be in biodegradable paper bags and must not contain any rubbish or trash. Bags must be placed at the curb by 6 a.m. the day of pick up.
A spaghetti dinner to benefit Matthew Taylor is planned for 1-6 p.m. Nov. 16 at Cecil #3 Fire Hall, Route 50. There will also be a Chinese auction, bake sale and 50/50 raffle. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets will be available at the door.
In 2011, Taylor, 23, was paralyzed from the neck down in an ocean accident. He has required months of extensive treatment and rehab. Proceeds from the dinner will be used toward more therapy and equipment.
Taylor is the son of John and Kim Taylor of Coleman-Taylor Funeral Services, Cecil, and the grandson of Arlene Curry of Cecil.
Dave Montz, a 25-year-employee of the borough, was honored Nov. 4 at a council meeting. He received the Community Pride award.

Leaves raked to the street will be collected through Nov. 22. Collection days are Tuesday through Friday and unlike in past years, there will not be a designated day for each street. Bagged leaves will not be collected.
The high school cheerleaders and cheer boosters will hold an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast 8:30 a.m.-noon Nov. 16 at St. Benedict the Abbot Church, McMurray. Pancakes, sausage, juices and coffee will be served.
A 50/50 raffle is planned, along with a Chinese auction featuring sporting tickets and merchandise, gift cards, lottery tickets, cash and other themed baskets. Pancake flipping, eating and decorating contests are also planned.

• Peters Township Character Counts will hold a soldier collection drive through Nov. 30 for Operation Troop Appreciation. Collection boxes are at the township offices, library, recreation center and VFW Post 764. Needed items are soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, crackers, beef jerky, granola bars, microwave popcorn, new or used video games and system and thank you notes.
• A leadership in Sports Forum will be held 7-8:15 p.m. Nov. 25 in the Peters Township High School cafeteria for student athletes in grades 5-12, and for coaches. Featured speakers include Chris Morgan, pastor of contemporary worship at Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park; Chris Kelly, middle school teacher and Peters Township head boys volleyball coach; and Jay Zeminski, middle school teacher and middle school cross country, basketball and track and field coach. The program is sponsored by the Peters Township School District athletic department and the township’s Parks and Recreation Department.

South Fayette
The toy drive for local township and Bridgeville families is underway. New toys for ages 5-15 years are requested and may be dropped off at the municipal building until Nov. 30. Toys may be picked up by calling 412-292-1342.
The Upper St. Clair High School music department is taking orders for the annual luminaria sale. All proceeds benefit the USC band, orchestra and choral students.
Each bag contains 12 long-burning candles, bags and sand for $10. For more than 20 kits, the cost is $8 per kit. Orders must be received by Dec. 4 and will be delivered to Upper St. Clair residents on Dec. 7. Order online at www.uscbpa.org.
Non-residents may order, but the order must be picked up at the old recreation center on McLaughlin Run Road between 8 a.m.-noon Dec. 7. Extra kits will also be sold until noon Dec. 7 at the old recreation center.

Washington County Parks will offer a home school outdoor classroom for ages 5-11 at Mingo Creek Park on Nov. 14. Sessions are available at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Learn about predatory birds and types of owls that live in our area.
