Hickory Heights a friend to SF

1 min read

Hickory Heights Golf Course has been a friend to South Fayette High School golf and WPIAL Class AAA champion Corey Long.

Owned by Sam Depe, the club does not charge the school or its golfers any green fees for practices or matches. “Not too many courses do that,” said SF coach Bob Ruffolo.

The Lions are grateful for that and more, says Ruffolo. In addition Depe’s son, Sam, and assistant pro, Don Strassenr, also help the Lions whenever possible. “If they see something with the kids’ swing, they’ll point it out. They give great advice and help with whatever they can.”

Hickory Heights and the staff have certainly helped create a champion in Long, who does not take any private lessons. “They’ve really helped me a lot,” he said, “and I’m really thankful for that.”

Long is now qualified for the PIAA tournament. If he finishes among the top 20 golfers at the qualifier to be held Oct. 16 at Tom Run Golf Course in Blairsville, Long will advance to the state championships scheduled for Oct. 21-22.
