Bethel Central Girl Scouts will hold an open house for Daisy and Brownie Scouts 6:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Girl Scout Cabin in South Park, located off the traffic circle on Corrigan Drive.
Girls in grades K-3 along with their parents are invited. There will be crafts and snacks for the girls, and parents will learn about the opportunities available to their daughters in scouting.

“Allegheny Land Trust and Wingfield Pines” will be the topic of the Bridgeville Area Historical Society meeting at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Chartiers Room of the fire department. Emlie Rzotkiewicz will present. Wingfield Pines is located off Mayview Road near the Upper St. Clair Recreation Center.
The society meets the second Tuesday of the month in the fire hall with the exception of January and February when meetings are held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Jack-O-Lantern Jog will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 26 at the Central Van & Storage Warehouse in Meadowlands. There will be a 5K race for runners and a non-timed 1-mile stroll for walkers.
The event benefits the Community Scholarship Foundation of Canon-McMillan, which awards money to deserving graduating high school students in the district, who are continuing with post-secondary education.
Awards will be given for the 5K run in several age groups as well as for the top three overall men and women; top two males and females in the Masters Division (age 40 and over). Teams of five or more individuals are invited to compete.
Preregistered participants are guaranteed a T-shirt and goodie bag with raffle tickets for the Chinese auction and the grand prize drawing. Chinese auction prizes will be drawn at 9 a.m. and the grand prize drawing will be held at the end of the race. Winners must be present.

The Society for Educational Development will offer a free guided fall nature walk at 9 a.m. Oct. 12. Meet at the Nature Center entrance on Crestmont Avenue. The rain date is 10 a.m. Oct. 13.
The 30th annual Pumpkin Festival will be held Oct. 11-13 at the American Legion Post 902 Fairgrounds. Proceeds benefit the Houston Volunteer Fire Department. There is limited handicapped parking at the festival grounds and no pets or bicycles are permitted.
Jefferson Middle School sixth grade social studies teacher Ashlee Mae Beckett was selected for the Mind, Heart and Spirit Awards by the Young Alumni Council at Duquesne University. She is a 2005 graduate of Duquesne and is responsible for developing an International Club and International Night, which is used at the middle school to benefit two orphanages in Columbia and Haiti. Beckett will be honored at a reception at the university Nov. 2.
The Fall 2013 Character Counts Recognition Awards will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 in the Peters Township Council Chambers.

The Rotary Club of Upper St Clair – Bethel Park will hold its 25th Annual Chicken Bar-B-Que 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Oct. 12 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Route 19, Upper St. Clair.
Each dinner consists of a half of a chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, dinner roll, dessert and drink. Eat in or drive thru. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. For more information, call 412-833-6229.

• The 2013 fall yard debris and leaf collection days will be Oct. 19 and 26, and Nov. 2, 9, 16, and 23. All leaves and yard debris must be placed in compost bags and be left at the curb by 6 a.m. the morning of pickup.
