Peters Township Public Library, in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, will present “China as Number One? Scarcity and China’s Ascent in the 21st Century” at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at the library. The Old Schoolhouse Players, Hickory, will hold auditions at 7 p.m. Oct. 13-14 for “The Littlest Angel,” which runs in December. Those auditioning should prepare a brief song, no more than 16 bars. Cast requirements : one little angel, age 7 to 10, and 12 to 20 adults. There are ten speaking roles, which include the Gatekeeper, Understanding Angel, Heavenly Messenger and Divine Music Director.
The Old Schoolhouse Players will present “Over the River and Through the Woods” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11-13 and Oct. 18-20 at the Bud Allison Memorial Auditorium, Mt. Pleasant Township Community Center, 20 Wabash Avenue, Hickory. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m. Sunday performances are at 3 p.m.

On Oct. 11, the Literary Society at La Roche College will host a presentation that explores the history of Pittsburgh’s medical establishments.
Guest speaker G. Alan Yeasted, M.D., FACP, senior vice president and chief medical officer at St. Clair Hospital in Mt. Lebanon, will present “The History of Pittsburgh Hospitals and Medical Schools.” Dr. Yeasted will focus on today’s institutions and the independent and Catholic hospitals that previously existed in the city of Pittsburgh.
The presentation will begin at 8 p.m. in the Ryan Room of the Zappala College Center at La Roche’s main campus in the North Hills. Open to the public, the event is free and will include refreshments.

Renaissance & Baroque presents the internationally acclaimed vocal ensemble Stile Antico, performing The Phoenix Rising, a program of choral music from the English Renaissance, at 8 p.m. Oct. 12 at Calvary Episcopal Church, Shadyside.

The Peters Township Public Library will welcome Dan Rooney and Carol Peterson at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 15 to discuss the book they co-authored, “Allegheny City: A History of Pittsburgh’s North Side.”
Rooney will explain the role of the Pennsylvania Railroad in the landscape, share comments about famous North Side families, and describe his faith in the future of the neighborhood. Peterson will provide details about the architecture and ethnic groups on the North Side.
Copies of the book will be available for signing and purchase after the discussion.

Pennsylvania Trolley Museum’s annual Pumpkin Patch Trolley runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Oct. 11-13, 18-20 and 25-27, with the last ride leaving at 4:15 p.m.
The antique trolley takes children to select a pumpkin at the patch and to decorate it at the new education events room.
Pumpkin Patch admission includes unlimited rides on multiple trolleys and tours of the display building.
Admission is $10/adults; $9/seniors 62 and older; $7/children ages 1-15; and free for kids under 1. Admission includes a pumpkin for each child. Additional pumpkins are $2.

• In conjunction with the Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts Christmas Festival, which runs Oct. 18-20 and Oct. 26-27, the museum will offer park and ride service from its lot to the Washington County Fairgrounds. Service runs 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Round-trip trolley tickets are $2 per person (children under 3 are free) and riders are taken to the main gate of the festival. This rate does not include Pumpkin Patch activities or the museum.

Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Masterpiece Season begins with “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder. Featuring an all-Pittsburgh cast including Tom Atkins of Peters Township and Elliot Pullen, an 11-year-old from Mt. Lebanon, “Our Town” runs through Oct. 27 at the O’Reilly Theater, in Downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District.

Boy Scout Troop 248 of Oakdale will hold its Haunted Cabin 7-9 p.m. Oct. 23-26.
Located at 248 Clinton Avenue, the Haunted Cabin ground covers almost a full acre and features a covered bridge, maze, torture chamber, Grizzly Mansion, Barracuda Cove, Dead Man’s Pass and graveyard. Meet the judge, creek critters and maybe even the Cabin Witch.

Tony Award-winning theatrical set designer Donyale Werle will be the featured speaker for the Design Dialogue presentation hosted by the La Roche College Interior Design Advisory Board on Oct. 24 at the Carnegie Science Center.
