Scott residents question traffic barriers
While some in the Glendale section of Scott Township aren’t keen on the appearance of recently installed concrete traffic barriers known as bollards, Al Parente is more concerned about their spacing.
A resident of Magazine Street, Parente was at the Scott commissioners Oct. 8 agenda meeting to let the board know of his concerns. Parente said the distance between the bollards located at the end of Magazine Street is 8 feet, 7 inches, the same size of the parking spaces at the municipal building. While the bollards are supposed to protect pedestrians from traffic, Parente said the spacing would allow some vehicles to pass through.
According to Parente’s research, the maximum space between bollards should be 5 feet, 4 inches.
“The area is right where kids wait for the school bus,” said Parente. “The bollards should be spaced so they can do the job they were designed to do.”
Township manager Denise Fitzgerald indicated the township would look into it. The spacing could be corrected by reinstalling the bollards and moving them closer together, or additional bollards could be added to reduce the open space.
Commissioner Dave Calabria said that the township should not be billed for the cost of correcting the problem since the project employed professionals that should have known how the bollards should have been placed.
