Lions, Rebels headed in different directions
Bethel Park’s Carmen Jasante (No. 45) brings down Stephen Mackowick but not after the Upper St. Clair running back makes a big gain. Mackowick later scored on a 32-yard run that sealed USC’s 28-13 win over the Hawks and pushed the Panthers’ record to 7-0.
Gary Gerst is tackled by Ben Southorn during Southeastern Conference action. Although the Upper St. Clair defense surrendered its first points in five games, it recorded a 28-13 victory over Bethel Park to remain undefeated at 7-0 this season.
Since their Century Conference clash, South Fayette and Seton-La Salle have headed in opposite directions. While both have clinched playoff spots, the Lions continue to dominate the league. Ranked No. 3 in Class AA, they improved to 7-0 overall with a 49-0 win over Riverside. The Lions are 6-0 in the Century Conference.
Against the Raiders, Brett Brumbaugh completed 13 of 23 passes for 240 yards and four touchdowns. Conner Beck hauled in a pair of 15- and 19-yard strikes while Logan Sharp grabbed two tosses of 23 and 15 yards.
Hunter Hayes and Grant Fetchet rushed for scores of 12 and 15 yards. A 20-yard hook-up between Mike Speca and Nick Ponikvar completed the scoring for the Lions, who host South Park at 7 p.m. Oct. 18. The Eagles clinched a playoff spot with a 22-0 shutout over Steel Valley.
Meanwhile, the Rebels slipped to third place in the league after dropping a 40-14 decision to Quaker Valley. SLS is 5-2 overall and trail the Lions and the Quakers in the conference standings.
In the loss, Tyler Perone completed 22 of 36 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns of 5 and 6 yards to Danzel McKinley-Lewis and Kevin Curran. Dom DelGreco kicked both extra points. McKinley-Lewis had six receptions for 89 yards.
The Rebels look to get back on the winning track when they go outside the division to play Mohawk at Chartiers Valley at 7 p.m. Oct. 18.
In Class A action, Chartiers-Houston took a step toward a playoff berth when the Bucs defeated California, 17-7.
In the victory, Mile Williamson caught seven passes for 82 yards and one score, a 29-yard strike from Kaleb Susko. Derek Hull added a 4-yard TD run and Mike Cushma tacked on a 39-yard field goal.
With the win, the Bucs improved to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the Black Hills Conference. They host Monessen (5-1, 6-1) at 7 p.m. Oct. 18.
Meanwhile, Keystone Oaks, Chartiers Valley and Bishop Canevin have been eliminated from post-season action and are playing out their season, with home games on tap for each this week.
The Golden Eagles look for their second win in a row when they host McGuffey at Dormont Stadium at 7 p.m. Oct. 18. KO is 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the Century Conference after outlasting South Allegheny, 26-24.
Jimmy Canello rushed for 110 yards and a 4-yard touchdown. Kobe Phillippi played a hand in KO’s other scores. He completed TD aerials of 6 and 23 yards to Tyler Chiocca and Braydon Griffiths. Phillippi also rushed for a 22-yard score. John Beveridge kicked two extra points.
Canevin hosts Brentwood at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at Dormont Stadium. The Spartans are 4-4 overall and 4-3 in the Black Hills Conference after their 35-13 win against Carlynton while the Crusaders are 1-6 in the division and 2-6 overall after falling to Clairton, 42-7.
Reed Relosky hooked up with Austin Scott for the only Canevin score, a 17-yard TD aerial. Ryn Durbin kicked the extra point.
In the Parkway Conference, Chartiers Valley hosts Blackhawk at 7 p.m. Oct. 18. The Colts are 1-5 in the league and 1-6 overall after a 42-28 loss to Ambridge.
In the defeat, Josh Lapiana completed 12 passes for 169 yards and two scores. He also rushed for a 10-yard touchdown.
Delmar King caught a 41-yard scoring strike from Lapiana while Anthony Voss pulled in a 65-yard TD aerial. He also kicked the extra points for the Colts. Andreo Coury rushed 55 yards for the first score of the game, giving CV a brief, 7-0, lead.
