Lebo to price high school rifle range
Mt. Lebanon will get an updated price for a high school rifle range, per guidance from the school board at its Oct. 14 meeting.
The school district included a rifle range as an add alternate when it bid its high school renovation project in 2011. At that time the low bid came in at about $400,000. The board decided not to include the rifle range in the project, but to consider it as a capital project at a later date. The high school project has now progressed to the point where a decision is needed regarding the range.
District project manager Rick Marciniak said the rifle coach previously attempted to determine if the scope of work could be reduced. “My understanding was he brought a couple companies in and they did not agree with him. One wanted something like $16,000 to prepare a revised proposal,” Marciniak explained, adding that nothing had ultimately come of the coach’s efforts.
District solicitor Tom Peterson said as long as the board re-bids the rifle range as an add alternate it can re-use the original bid documents. If the original low bidder is willing to finish the work for the 2011 price the district could award the contract straight away. If the contractor quotes a higher price, however, the range project would have to be re-bid. In either case it would be treated as a change order. The cost would be included in the total figure for the high school project.
Board member Dan Remely expressed concern regarding uncertainty inherent in the old bid.
“We have no contingency,” he said, “no fees or soft costs. Also, police and fire are going to be very involved with this. I’d like to get all the numbers as best we can. $400,000 might be a nice number but if it comes out to $500,000 or $600,000 I know I won’t be happy with that. I don’t think our capital projects fund will be too happy with that, either.”
