Discover the ins and outs of the college financial aid process as the Peters Township Public Library will hold a College Financial Aid Night at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 21 for high school students and their parents.

Registration is required for this free program by emailing programs@ptlibrary.org or calling 724-941-9430.

Entries are due by Oct. 25 for the South Hills Showdown, a cheer and dance competition hosted by the Bethel Park High School Competitive Spirit Squad.

The competition will take place at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 9 in the new state of the art gymnasium at Bethel Park High School and is open to all school, recreation and all-star cheer squads, dance teams, stunt groups and individuals. There will be multiple award ceremonies throughout the day. All judges will be UCA certified. PRIDE of Bethel Park will host a Rachel’s Challenge community event Oct. 23. Rachel’s Challenge is a series of programs that equips students and adults to combat bullying by creating a culture of kindness and compassion. The program is based on the writings and life of Rachel Scott, who at 17 years old was the first student killed at Columbine High School in 1999.

Superintendents, principals, teachers, parents, and students bring Rachel’s Challenge into their schools because of escalating problems such as bullying, student isolation, teen suicide, discrimination, school violence, and increased disciplinary actions.

The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Bethel Park High School. The event is open to the community.

Jubilee Christian School, an inter-denominational school for grades K-7 in Mt. Lebanon, will hold an open house at 10 a.m. Oct. 24. Attend a brief informational session, meet with the school’s principal and tour school facilities.

Applications are currently being aaccepted for the 2014-2015 school year. Openings are available for students in first through seventh grade who wish to transfer from public, private or home-school settings for the 2013-2014 school year.

Pathfinder School, Bethel Park, will hold a pasta dinner sponsored by Jack Albenzi Catering, 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 25. Cost is $7.50/adults and $3/kids 5 and under. Take-outs are $5. Raffle baskets and book fair. Proceeds support student activities.

Peters Township High School senior Maxwell Lindsay has been named a semifinalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Lindsay is among an elite group of 16,000 students from across the nation to earn this honor.

Lindsay will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $35 million, that will be offered next spring. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Twenty-nine Bethel Park High School students have been selected to participate in apprenticeship programs sponsored by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit during the 2013-2014 school year.

These students will participate in either half-or day-long learning experiences throughout the school year, that enable them to meet and work with professionals who are willing to share their experience, expertise and enthusiasm for what they do for a living, giving these students a first-hand look at potential career paths.

Participating this school year are seniors Jamie Cavrak (engineering), Jarrod Cingel (engineering), Kevin Fleischmann (robotics), Rachel Gaddis (green design), Michael Gronsky (leadership), Werner Hernandez (robotics), Eric Kaminski (marine biology), Alyssa Kearns (zoo animal care), Katerina Kimes (engineering), Hayley Lazzari (international affairs), Alexandria Meyer (nursing and healthcare), Max Rowan (robotics), Dylan Sperling (zoo animal care) and Katie Zilcosky (broadcast journalism).

Juniors include: Christopher Bright (filmmaking), Tim Colborn (musical theater), Walter Donnellan (green design), Craig Fischer (astronomy), Samantha Jensen (architecture), Bonny Miller (zoo animal care), Jelena Mrvos (green design), Shannon Mueser (architecture) and Matea Pranjic (international affairs).

Also participating are sophomores Jack Brownfield (screenwriting), David Erzen (architecture), Andrew Guerrero (astronomy), Amelia Heastings (acting), Macie McKitrick (astronomy) and Carolyn Vona (education).

Fifteen Bethel Park High School juniors have been selected to participate in the Westinghouse Science Honors Institute.

They are: Amrita Beaudine, Colton Blair, Bryce Carter, Aaron Coplan, Steven Davis, Jake Eichenlaub, Lauren Hensler, Emily Kukan, Tayler McGurk-Mannarino, Brendan Moorhead, Jordan Myers, Keith Powell, Mackenzie Stark, Vincent Tavoletti and Harrison Zelt.

They were nominated by Bethel Park High School science teachers Lee Cristofano, Cassandra Haught, Dawn Ogilvie, Clyde Qualk and Narissa Tongchinsub.

This is the 57th year that Westinghouse has offered this series of 11 free Saturday science lectures for area juniors who demonstrate a strong interest in science and engineering and who are of high scholastic standing. Approximately 500 juniors are accepted into the program.

In addition to networking with area professionals and interacting with students from different schools, participants have the opportunity to tour Penn State University’s Breazeale nuclear reactor.

Peters Township High School seniors Cody Ruffing and Georgia Gagianas were crowned homecoming king and queen during Peters Township High School homecoming festivities. In addition to Ruffing and Gagianas, the homecoming court included seniors Amanda Abell, Rachel Hobbs, Brenna Sweeney and Tori Weida, and seniors Brock Burns, Christian Coleman, Anthony Lioon and Matthew Neky. Underclassmen representatives included Emily Cottrill and Hunter Stevick, ninth grade; Mia Knavish and Boomer Kemp, 10th grade; and Carly Johns and Carl Nicolella, 11th grade.

Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern PA has school programs available for preschool through college students in Washington County.
