SF discusses moving up a class in football

The topic of South Fayette High School’s football team moving up a class in the PIAA (Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association) was not on the agenda for the Oct. 21 school board meeting, although it was brought up by board member Leonard Fornella.

Currently, the South Fayette Lions football team is in PIAA’s Class AA, but Fornella said because the team is winning games by scores of 50-0 or 60-0, it may be time to think about moving up a class sooner than later.

“I don’t see that our kids are gaining a lot by beating teams smaller than them,” Fornella said. “I don’t see it’s competitive to be in AA,” he added. South Fayette is one of the largest AA schools in the WPIAL.

Board President Bill Newcomer said he has had a number of people tell him they are not going to as many games as they usually do “because of the blowouts.”

“I think it’s inevitable,” said board member Frank Morelli of South Fayette about moving up to AAA. “Let’s rip off the band-aid and do it,” he said. “The fact is, we are only three or four boys short right now,” Morelli added.

“I do think we need to at least discuss this matter with the coaches and athletic director,” said Superintendent Dr. Bille Rondinelli. She told the board the administration would look into the matter.
