The Bethel Park Lions will be at South Park Shops from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 5 for the annual White Cane Day solicitation. All donations will benefit the blind and vision-impaired charities. Club members will be wearing orange vests.
• The Bethel Park Volunteer Fire Co. will hold a free open house and car cruise from noon-4 p.m. Oct. 6, rain or shine, at the Brightwood Road Station.
There will be free hot dogs and drinks, a car cruise with a DJ, Sparky’s birthday celebration, fire trucks, an ambulance and police car, along with an antique fire truck display, fire fighter challenge for children, vehicle rescue demonstration, and fire safety house.
Effective immediately, entry to the borough offices will be through the main front door. There will no longer be access through the side door because of construction.
Castle Shannon Revitalization Corporation will host its second annual Castle Shannon Fall Festival 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 28 on Willow Avenue (between Park and Poplar avenues).
Admission is free and attractions include live entertainment, artisan crafts, local foods and children’s activities.
An Apple Pie Contest will be held and two pies must be entered – one for judging and one for the silent auction.

The Sept. 30 meeting with the Washington County Redevelopment Authority concerning the Cool Valley Development was canceled. The meeting will be rescheduled. No time and date have been announced.
Friends of the Green Tree Public Library will hold its annual used book sale Oct. 3-7 at the Green Tree Municipal Center, 10 West Manilla Avenue, right off the Parkway West.
The fund raiser kicks off with a preview sale open to Friends only 7-9 p.m. Oct. 3. Friends memberships may be obtained at the door at a cost of $5 per individual or $8 per family. The sale opens to the general public 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Oct. 4, and continues 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 5 . A $6 bag sale will take place noon-4 p.m. Oct. 6, and a $5 bag sale will be held 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 7.
Browse a vast selection of paperback and hardback books plus vintage books, music, videos, books on CD and more. Most items priced at $1. Cash, check and credit cards accepted. Free parking.

The Paper Exchange will shred confidential papers at the public works yard, 1250 Lindendale Drive off Cedar Boulevard from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 28. The first box is free and additional boxes cost $5 for the size of 18 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches. Cash or checks acceptable.
• Women ages 18 and over are invited to join the Tapestry Choir. Performance experience and the ability to read music are preferred but not required. Rehearsals are held at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1240 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon, 12:30-2 p.m. Mondays, beginning Sept. 30.
The Tapestry Choir, which performs for AARP meetings, retirement homes and church and civic groups, offers a wide selection of standard popular music, secular and upbeat music geared to the mature adult. • State Sen. Matt Smith, D-Mt. Lebanon, will hold a Senior Fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Galleria of Mt. Lebanon, 1500 Washington Road. More than 100 exhibitors will provide information on services, products and programs geared to older adults. Area seniors will be able to speak with representatives from federal, state and local agencies to receive information for Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program and the state’s PACE and PACENET programs.
Free health screenings and influenza immunizations will be available for those 65 and older. Bring Medicare or supplemental insurance.
• Mt. Lebanon Commissioners are seeking applications from residents to fill an immediate vacancy on the historic preservation board. At least one more will be filled in March. The board is a seven-member group of volunteers that provides the municipal commission with advice concerning historic preservation in the context of economic development. The members, who serve three-year terms, work closely with the commission and other advisory boards to ensure community development progresses in ways sensitive to the environment.
Board members may live in any ward of the municipality. A background in community development, historic preservation, architecture, landscape design or real estate is helpful, although anyone may apply.

The Consortium for Science Assistance to Watershed will conduct a training for volunteer water quality monitors. The training, intended for new volunteers and as a refresher course for those with experience, will be held on two Saturdays at the North Strabane Municipal Building on Route 519.
The first session from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sept. 28 will provide water quality training. The second session from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 5 will focus on identifying macroinvertebrates.

Green will be the new orange this year as the Peters Township Public Library’s GO Green Club holds a Great Halloween Costume Swap Oct. 4-5 at the library. Instead of purchasing new costumes each year, the group aims to encourage the community to swap their slightly used costumes to save resources, packaging, transportation costs and money.
From 3-5 p.m. Oct. 4, participants can drop off used but in great condition costumes for children or adults at the library and get a token for the swap. Return 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 5 with the token and shop. Volunteers are needed both days. Email ptplgogreenclub@gmail.com.
The township’s annual disabled sportsman deer hunt is Oct. 24-26 and volunteers are needed to assist disabled hunters, to conduct drives and to drag the deer. The hunt is in need of sponsors. The Myasthenia Gravis Assoc. of Western Pennsylvania invites all dog lovers to South Park Oct. 27 for the annual Pooch Parade. The family-friendly event features a one-mile fun walk on a paved trail beginning at the dog park in South Park.
All registered participants will receive a tote bag of goodies.
The event features a costume contest with prizes for the best dog and best dog/owner combo costumes. A variety of vendors will have information and products.

Miracle League of the South Hills and Casey’s Clubhouse will hold a Halloween party from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 20 at Miracle League of South Hills Field. The rain location is the recreation center, also at 1551 Mayview Road.
Join the league, players, buddies, friends and families as they pick candy or a small gift from friends of the league. The event is free.
