Global Links has moved to Green Tree and the international medical relief agency will celebrate the opening of its new world headquarters at 700 Trumbull Drive with an 11 a.m. ribbon cutting ceremony Oct. 4. Facility tours will also be given.
A free community day celebration is planned for Oct. 5 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Music, entertainment, crafts for children, an international shopping village, tours of Global Links’ new facility and volunteer center and food trucks, including Pittsburgh Taco Truck, Nakama, Randita’s and Street Foods will be featured.
Global Links is dedicated to improving health in resource-poor communities while reducing medical waste. The corporation provides a socially and environmentally beneficial alternative to sending tons of still-useful materials to landfills.

Mt. Lebanon Commissioners are seeking applications from residents to fill an immediate vacancy on the community’s historic preservation board. At least one more spot will be filled in March 2014.
The Mt. Lebanon Historic Preservation Board, a seven-member group of volunteers that provides the municipal commission with advice concerning historic preservation in the context of economic development, works closely with the commission and other advisory boards to ensure community development progresses in ways sensitive to the environment. Members serve three-year terms and are appointed “at large,” meaning they can live in any ward of the municipality. A background in community development, historic preservation, architecture, landscape design or real estate is helpful, but not required.

Bethel Central Girl Scouts will hold an open house for Daisy and Brownie Scouts 6:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Girl Scout Cabin in South Park, located off the traffic circle on Corrigan Drive.
Girls in grades K-3 along with their parents are invited. There will be crafts and snacks for the girls, and parents will learn about the opportunities available to their daughters in scouting.

The Washington County Community Foundation’s Building Charitable Capacity Learning Institute will host a Nonprofit Board Governance Seminar 1-3 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Western Area Career & Technology Center, Canonsburg.

Family Hospice and Palliative Care, a non-profit organization that is Western Pennsylvania’s leading hospice provider, is accepting names to be memorialized on its Celebration of Life Wall, a granite structure located on the grounds of The Center for Compassionate Care, Family Hospice’s inpatient center in Mt. Lebanon.
For a $1,000 donation, the name of a loved one will be permanently inscribed on the wall, which can accommodate more than 1,000 names. Donations made by Oct. 30 will ensure names being added to the Wall during the next engraving, in November.

Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern PA is looking for individuals, businesses, schools, churches and agencies to participate in its Purple Ribbon Tree Campaign. In October, community residents decorate small trees and shrubs with purple ribbons and larger trees with big bows to help raise awareness of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association offers assistance with the cost of flu vaccines for adults and children affected by neuromuscular disease, including Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

The influenza vaccine for 2013-2014 will help protect against three viruses-influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2) viruses, as well as the common influenza B virus. Individuals affected by muscle disease can receive reimbursement, up to $35, for the cost of vaccines received from licensed health care professionals, including those located at retail pharmacies. MDA clinics may also offer flu shots in certain areas.

On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, Koda Bridal in Mt. Lebanon will open its doors on a first-come, first-served basis for its Salute to Soldiers Bridal Giveaway. Over 40 bridal gowns in sizes 16-30 will be given away to women or their betrothed military personnel who have served in the military, have been deployed in the last five years, or are going to be deployed in the near future.
Participating ladies must meet certain criteria to qualify and must preregister online.
Other wedding vendors will be on-site to make wedding planning easier.

Washington County Community Foundation will raffle off four Steelers tickets and limousine service to and from Heinz Field for the Nov. 17, 2013, game against the Detroit Lions. The game tickets, donated by the Observer-Reporter, are in section 535, row F (at the 50-yard line).
Raffle tickets are $10 each. The winner will be determined by the first validated Pennsylvania Lottery number drawn at 7 p.m. Nov. 1. If the number drawn on this date is an unsold ticket, the winner will be determined by the next day’s 7 p.m. drawing until a winner is determined.
Proceeds from the raffle benefit the WCCF’s Acorn Fund, which makes grants to local charities. To date, the Fund has awarded more than $500,000 in six funding areas: arts and humanities, education, environment and animal welfare, health and fitness, human needs, and religion and faith-based.

Submissions for composers to submit new works to Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s 10th Annual Reading Session must be received no later than Nov. 8.
To be eligible, applicants must be residents of Pennsylvania at the time of submissions and in the early stages of their careers. Previous participants may not reapply and submitted works must not have received a performance or a reading by a professional orchestra previously. Only one work per composer will be considered.
Submissions will be evaluated by 2013-14 Year of Pittsburgh Composers adviser David Stock and read by the PSO conducted by Leonard Slatkin on March 15, 2014. Following the session, which is free and open to the public, composers will receive feedback from a panel including Stock, Slatkin and the PSO musicians.
Selected works will be announced Dec. 6.
