A St. Vincent de Paul truck drive to collect household items and clothing will be held 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 28 and 29 at St. Patrick’s Church in Canonsburg.

Clean, usable items in boxes and bags should be brought to the parking lot to be loaded onto a truck. All sizes and ages are needed. Coats especially are wanted along with household items, linens, blankets and kitchenware as well as small, working appliances.

Donations help to assist needy families. Do not bring items in need of repair, cribs, office equipment or auto parts. Do not drop items off on the church property at any other time or location.

Fall kick-off

Youth ministry at St. Patrick Parish, Canonsburg, will hold a cookout at the rectory beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29. Students, grades 7-12, and their parents are welcome. Email youth@stpatrickparish.net with questions.

Christian Mothers

Christian Mothers and Guild at St. Patrick Parish, Canonsburg, will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 in the cafeteria. John Dowling will speak on the needs of deployed service men and women. Jack Rosatti will talk about sending shoe boxes overseas.

Center Church

Stop hunger event

Westminster Presbyterian Church, Upper St. Clair, and Christ United Methodist Church, Bethel Park, will partner Sept. 28 in the fight against hunger. More than 800 volunteers are needed to make this one-day event a success.

Shifts are planned in 1-½ hour increments, beginning at 9 a.m., 10:30, noon, 1:30 p.m. or 3 at Westminster Church.

Literature series

The Epiphany Association, 820 Crane Avenue, Beechview, will host a four-part series through 2014 titled “The Epiphany as Spiritual Illumination in Religious Fiction.”

Animal blessing

Shoe box collection

Christian Crafters at Fawcett U.M. Church, Bridgeville, are collecting items for its Christmas shoe box ministry for Native American children. Fleece blankets for infant to pre-teen children are also being made. Needed are two yards of fleece material, slippers, socks, mittens, gloves and hats as well as small toys, books, etc.

Ethnicfest

Nativity of The Virgin Mary Orthodox Church, Monongahela, will hold its 15th Annual Ethnicfest Sept. 28-29 at Chess Park.

Ethnicfest opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday and closes at dusk on both days.

There will be ethnic and American foods, flea market, bake sale and bounce house for kids. The Nutones polka band will perform 3 p.m.-dusk Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.

Food festival

St. George Orthodox Church, Bridgeville, will hold its “Original Feast from the East” Mediterranean food festival Oct. 4-6 at the church on Dewey Avenue.

Hours are noon-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon-6 p.m. Sunday.

Menu items include shish kabob lamb dinner, Mediterranean marinated chicken, grape leaves and kibbee, and desserts such as baklawa, nut rolls and more.

The Pet Ministry at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Upper St. Clair, will hold the following free events:

St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, Canonsburg, will hold an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast 8 a.m.-noon Oct. 12, featuring pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, home fries and beverage.

Jewish learning

Chabad of the South Hills, Mt. Lebanon, will offer “Life in the Balance: Jewish Perspectives on Everyday Medical Dilemmas,” a new course by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute. The course will cover BRCA gene and genetic testing, end of life dilemmas, autopsy and anatomical dissection, aborting one life to save another, should the sale of organs be legal, and womb transplants.

Name change

Bible study

Community Bible study holds its fall nondenominational study from 7-8:40 p.m. Mondays at Southminster Presbyterian Church, Mt. Lebanon.

This year’s study will be the Book of Romans and its relevance to our daily lives. Topics include: Who is righteous in God’s eyes? Is God for us or against us? How do we love one another? Should we respect our governing authorities?
