A former football coach, basketball standout and wrestling official are among the area products to be inducted into the WPIAL’s Hall of Fame.

The banquet and ceremony will take place June 6 at the Greentree Doubletree Hotel. Tickets are $50 per person and must be purchased prior to May 30. Visit www.wpial.com for reservations.

Bob Jacoby headlines the list of area inductees. Throughout his 44-year career at Bishop Canevin High School, he served as a social studies teacher, an athletic director, softball and football coach.

“It is an honor to be inducted with such great WPIAL coaches, athletes and supporters. My time at Bishop Canevin was a great experience and one that I will always treasure,” said Jacoby.

Jacoby served as a head coach for 70 seasons – 40 for football and 30 for softball. He was the school’s athletic director from 1979-2009. He retired from teaching and coaching in 2013.

Jacoby ranks as the 11th winningest football coach in WPIAL history with 238 victories. He coached the Crusaders to a district title and a state runner-up showing in 1990. His 1999 softball squad won a district and state championship on its way to an undefeated season.

A former player at North Catholic High School, Jacoby posted a 239-170-7 record for football. His record also included a WPIAL runner-up title in 1983. He won two WPIAL banners in softball.

Beth Friday Bovay also is among the 14 inductees, who will be part of a permanent display inside the Ralph Kaiser Trophy Room of the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum.

The 1999 Almanac Athlete of the Year led Upper St. Clair to its only PIAA championship in basketball. Plus, she excelled as a goalkeeper on the soccer team.

As a senior, she registered 17 shutouts in 26 soccer games and averaged 21 points and 16 rebounds for the basketball team. In one state game, she fired in 31 points and grabbed 26 rebounds. In four WPIAL soccer playoff games, she did not surrender a goal.

The Duquesne University graduate scored more than 1,000 career points and pulled down better than 1,000 career rebounds. She is one of only two Duquesne women to have their jersey number retired.

Larry Maggi enters the WPIAL Hall of Fame as a contest official.

A PIAA wrestling official since 1971, he has officiated 26 regional finals, 18 WPIAL team tournament championships and nine PIAA championship tournaments. He has also officiated in the prestigious Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic for 28 years.

He is the president of the Washington County Wrestling Officials Association and has served as the WPIAL wrestling rules interpreter for many years. On three different occasions, he has been named the Pennsylvania Wrestling Official of the Year.

Maggi served in the United States Marine Corps. A Pennsylvania State Trooper for 24 years, he currently sits on the Washington County Board of Commissioners.
