Continuum Dance Theater premieres “Empire”
Off the Wall Performing Arts Center, Carnegie, will present “Empire” by Continuum Dance Theater and guest artist LaMar Williams Aug. 7-10.
“Empire” explores how women have built their personal empires. In each of the four sections of the hour-long show, CDT studied at least a dozen women they deemed successful, from extraordinary mothers to Oprah Winfrey, the late Maya Angelou, Cleopatra and Greek and Roman women who stood out.
Section one, “Mother by Nature,” investigates women who lead families as well as women who give birth to concepts or businesses. The second section, “The Boardroom,” focuses on females in charge, those who sit at the “head of the table.” The third part, “Identity,” examines gender roles and women who are comfortable with their sexual identity. Lastly, “Hail the Queen” is a section of fantasy, based on a woman’s desire to rule the world, which acknowledges the incredible female leaders in our society.
As for the music, Parker included instrumentalists, spoken word, background noises and even some recognizable pop music.
Thursday through Saturday performances will take place at 8 p.m. Sunday’s performance is at 3 p.m. Cost for the 18 and older show is $5 for students with valid ID, $10 for groups of 10 or more, $17 for seniors 60+ and $20 general admission. Off the Wall Performing Arts Center is located on West Main Street.
