High honors
Paige Harouse, grade 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harouse of Mt. Lebanon, earned High Honors for the spring 2014 term at Phillips Exeter Academy.
LEADERSHIP SUMMIT participant
Greydon Tomkowitz, 14, who will begin his freshman year at Bethel Park High School later this month, participated in the People To People Leadership In Action Summit at Harvard University.
Tomkowitz joined students from around the world to engage in curriculum designed to challenge global perspectives, spark thoughtful exchange about international issues, expand visions for world citizenship and experience college-level academics at a top-ranked Ivy League university. During the program, Tomkowitz also developed leadership qualities, prepared for college admissions and learned how to serve the greater good on a global scale.
In addition, the summit included hands-on activities, professional and collegiate speakers, and small-group workshops to help students enhance their self-confidence and experience life-changing growth in personal responsibility, global leadership and cultural diversity.
A recent graduate of St. Louise de Marillac Elementary School, Tomkowitz was nominated for the People to People Summit by teacher Victor Satter. Final participants are selected based on academic achievement, community service, extracurricular activities and personal narrative submissions.
School announces expansion
Jubilee Christian School, an inter-denominational school for grades K-7 located in Mt. Lebanon, will expand to include eighth grade and an Upper Campus in the 2014-15 school year. The Upper Campus for grades 6-8 will be located in the educational wing of North Way Christian Community in Dormont. Adding an Upper Campus for grades 6-8 will enable Jubilee to meet the needs of current and prospective school families for a complete Kindergarten-through-middle-school education for their students, providing additional space for growth over the near- and long-term. Grades K-5 will continue to be housed at the Lower Campus, the school’s current location within the educational wing of Mt. Lebanon Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
Jubilee provides students a distinctive, integrated approach to learning. Unit themes focus on science, social studies and language arts. Classes in K-sixth grade have a monthly unit theme; in seventh through eighth grades, monthly unit themes give way to in-depth unit study that often happens over a period of several months. Hands-on activities, projects and monthly educational field trips are a key component of the integrated approach.
The small class sizes at Jubilee allow dedicated and caring teachers to address each student’s individual learning style and needs. In addition to academics, Jubilee fosters spiritual development founded on Biblical principles. Students also enjoy Spanish, gym, art, music, library, basketball and volleyball as part of a well-rounded education.

$1 MILLION CHALLENGE
The Aubrey Rose Foundation and its social enterprise, Writely Sew, are hosting a nationwide fundraising challenge to find the nation’s top college student, who will win $1 million. The challenge runs through Dec. 31, 2015, and will be divided into six academic semesters, three a year for two years.
Students will create and execute their own plans to raise development dollars for the Aubrey Rose Foundation. The individual who generates the greatest development gift to the Aubrey Rose Foundation over the length of the challenge will receive a $1 million annuity. The winner will be determined on Dec. 31, 2015. In addition, the top fundraiser for each of the six semesters will be awarded with a $100,000 annuity at the end of each semester. College fair
More than 140 colleges and universities will participate in the North Pittsburgh College Fair, 6-8 p.m. Oct. 6 at La Roche College’s Kerr Fitness & Sports Center in the North Hills.
