Among items discussed by Scott Township Commissioners during a recent workshop meeting was a lease between the township and the South Hills Area Council of Governments for offices at the old public works building, located on Old Greetree Road.

The council, which serves 17 South Hills communities, is considering moving from its current location in Mt. Lebanon. Township solicitor Robert McTiernan has been working out the details of leasing the unused office space.

Officials are discussing a possible rent amount of $1,000 a month and also making over the offices to accommodate the needs of SHACOG administration. Township manager Denise Fitzgerald said provisions would have to be made for cleaning, as well as insurance.

Commissioners also discussed the need to move used books now being stored in the space. The books, which were donated for the next Scott Township Public Library used book sale, would have to be moved, possibly to an unused school room in the township. Commissioner William Wells said the books need to be accessible for library volunteers to sort them for the sale.

“There may be an advantage to having SHACOG here,” said commissioner Tom Castello, referring to the fact that the council helps local governments with many issues.

Also discussed was the possibility of starting a Junior Commissioner Program.

Commission president David Jason suggested implementing the program, which is already in place in nearby Mt. Lebanon.

“Younger kids are much more interested in politics these days,” Jason said.

Jason suggested selecting one boy and one girl to serve during each semester of the school year.

“Maybe they could get some kind of school credit and (the township manager) could find something for them to work on,” he said.
