Mt. Lebanon Public Library welcomes author Sharon G. Flake at 7 p.m. Dec. 10.
Flake’s novels for children and young adults focus on race relations. One of her first stories, “The Luckiest Sister,” about twins who lead different lives because of their different skin colors, won the August Wilson short story contest. Her debut novel, “The Skin I’m In,” about a young African-American girl who is teased about the color of her skin and the way she dresses, won the John Steptoe Award for New Talent in 1999 for new authors and garnered critical acclaim.
Flake has written seven other novels, including: “Money Hungry,” “Begging for Change,” “Who Am I Without Him?,” “Bang!,”The Broken Bike Boy” and the “Queen of 33rd Street,” “You Don’t Even Know Me,” “Pinned” and her most recent book – her first historical fiction novel – “Unstoppable Octobia May,” was released this past September.
“I write about hope in hard places, about young people who encounter challenges but through perseverance, the help of good friends and the love of family and caring adults, learn just how wonderfully gifted, determined and capable they are,” said Flake, who will answer questions and sign copies of her books after her presentation. The event is free, and no registration is required.
