Mt. Lebanon High School launches STEM Academy
The Mt. Lebanon School District has launched a STEM Academy to promote college and career readiness for Mt. Lebanon students. The launch of the STEM Academy coincides with the opening of the new Mt. Lebanon High School Science and Technology Education wings.
Students may enroll in rigorous curricular offerings similar to college courses, such as organic chemistry, engineering statics, linear algebra and architectural drawing. The STEM Academy will also prepare students for college and career by interacting with local professionals in STEM-related fields to highlight the connections between classroom experiences and real world job opportunities. Last spring, science teacher Vince Scalzo’s advanced placement environmental geoscience students were visited by Carnegie Mellon University’s Albert Presto, a professor of mechanical engineering and member of CMU’s Center for Atmospheric Particle Studies. This collaboration among educators, businessmen and women and community partners culminate with each student in the academy taking part in a long-term externship prior to his or her senior year in high school.
Mt. Lebanon School District is also one of 13 school districts across the region participating in the Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway to help improve education practices in science, technology, engineering and math.
