Special treatment for a special teen

2 min read

I recently dined with a group of friends at Shouf’s Restaurant in Bridgeville. Seated at the next table were a father and son. The boy was mentally handicapped, about 13-years-old. We noticed, with great surprise and delight, that the wait staff was paying special attention to the boy. When he wanted to eat hot dogs, clearly not an item on a Middle Eastern menu, the chef gave him what he wanted.

When father and son finished their meal, the owner of the restaurant came out of the kitchen with a gift of a T-shirt – bearing the name of the restaurant – for him. And, as if that were not a sufficient treat, the owner took him for a tour of the restaurant, including the kitchen. Bear in mind that it was a very busy evening for the restaurant, but that did not bother the owner of Shouf’s. When the boy returned, approximately 20 minutes later, his arms were laden with boxes filled with special dishes served at Shouf’s. Where, by the way, the food is delicious. My friends and I will certainly return.

Indeed, the owner of Shouf’s is a very special person; the kind of individual who makes us renew our beliefs that humanity is still in vogue.
