Scholarships/Contests – Feb. 5

4 min read

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has extended the deadline for its inaugural High/Middle School Alcohol Awareness Video Contest by one week due to harsh winter weather and students losing valuable time to work on their anti-underage drinking messages at school. Submissions are now due Feb. 14.

Entries must be between 15 and 30 seconds long. The contest is open to all high school and middle school students in Pennsylvania – public, private, parochial or homeschooled. Only students are allowed to participate in the development and production of the video.

Videos will be judged on creativity and originality, a positive no-use message and overall presentation. Monetary awards range from $100 to $1,000. The winning projects will also be featured on the PLCB Bureau of Alcohol Education Facebook and YouTube pages, and may be used as part of the PLCB’s statewide Alcohol Education advertising campaign.

The PLCB will also award $1,000 to the school with the most entries. For contest rules and an entry form, including parental consent releases required for students under the age of 18; to learn how to submit videos; and for more information about the contest, visit www.lcb.state.pa.us and click on Alcohol Education; or email RA-LBEducation@pa.gov.

In affiliation with the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers, La Roche College and North Allegheny School District will sponsor the 2014 Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Feb. 8-23.

Artwork submitted by creative teens in grades 7-12 will be displayed in the Cantellops Gallery and the Zappala College Center at La Roche College. The exhibition will feature more than 850 works of art in 16 categories, including film and animation, sculpture, fashion design, video game design, photography, comic art and design. The display will be open daily to the public from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., including weekends.

On Feb. 23 at 3 p.m., La Roche College will honor the top-winning participants at an awards ceremony in the Kerr Fitness and Sports Center. Prizes include both regional and national awards, including the Emma Munson Memorial Scholarship awarded to a high school senior, selected from Regional Gold Key winners. Refreshments will be served prior to the event at 1:30 p.m.

Western Pennsylvania high school seniors are encouraged to enter the Eighth Annual “Words to be Heard” Scholarship Contest sponsored by Edgar Snyder & Associates.

The law firm is asking seniors to create programs that will prevent their peers from underage drinking, drunk driving or distracted driving. Students can submit entries using a number of creative options, including videos, PowerPoint presentations, brochures, websites, essays or any other approach they feel will effectively get the message across to their classmates.

A panel of outside judges will review the submissions and award one grand prize scholarship of $5,000, three second place scholarships of $2,500, and three runners-up scholarships of $1,000 that will go toward the students’ continued education.

High schools seniors entering the contest must plan to attend a four-year college or university in the summer or fall of 2014. All submissions must be postmarked on or before March 28.

For official rules or to request more information, visit www.edgarsnyder.com/scholarship, or call Edgar Snyder & Associates at 1-800-394-3660 ext. 4412.
