For the third year in a row, Seton-La Salle (21-4) will compete for the WPIAL Class AA championship in girls’ basketball. By virtue of their 62-40 victory over rival Bishop Canevin (19-6) on Feb. 25 at Chartiers Valley, the top-ranked Rebels advanced to the finals set for Feb. 28 at the A.J. Palumbo Center on the Duquesne University campus. The Lady Rebels will face Burrell, which dispatched Greensburg Central Catholic in its semifinal match.

Seton-La Salle won the 2012 district title as well as the PIAA championship. However, the Lady Rebels lost both those titles in 2013 to the Lady Crusaders.

Many of the current players remembered those beatings and for the third time this season combined to beat their nemesis.

Pitt recruits Naje Gibson and Yacine Diop as well as Shaunay Edmonds led the uprising against Canevin. Gibson exploded for 17 points, seven in the first quarter as the Rebels raced to an 18-8 advantage.

Edmonds took over in the second stanza. She fired in seven of her 15 tallies in a frame that saw the Crusaders cut the margin to 24-21 with 1:45 to play before intermission.

Behind Diop, SLS stretched a 28-22 halftime edge to 39-25 before settling into a 47-33 lead by the end of the third quarter. Diop tossed in 13 of her 15 points in the second half.

Though Erin Joyce buried three, 3-point field goals, the Rebels limited Canevin’s big guns–Johnie Olkosky and Gina Vallecorsa to eight points each. Becca Turney led the Crusaders with 14 markers
