Residents of Ward 2 interested in serving on municipal council have until Jan. 17 to submit a letter of interest and resume/qualifications to Municipality of Bethel Park, Attn: William J. Spagnol, 5100 W. Library Ave., Bethel Park, PA 15102.

The Bridgeville Area Historical Society will meet at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Chartiers Room of the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department, Commercial Street. Speaker Jack Aupperl will discuss General George Patton, “Blood, Guts and Prayers.”

• Jan. 13 is the deadline for information from nonprofit organizations for the next borough newsletter issue. The newsletter will cover February, March and April. No businesses or for-profit groups are permitted to submit information. Drop off the information to the borough office or email info@bridgevilleboro.com and put “Newsletter” in the subject line.

The township was named to the top of the list of safe cities in the state. According to SafeWise, the company that complies independent research with the most recent FBI crime reports, the township is known for its annual Fall Festival. The population has grown 16 percent since 2000.

A workshop will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 14 for worm composting, an effective and odorless way to recycle both food and paper waste, removing and reducing the volume of the waste stream and creating a great organic fertilizer. The fee is $40 a person or $55 a couple for the workshop in the Sycamore Room of the Green Tree Municipal Center. The fee includes a take-home vermiculture system with a half pound of worms.

The Pennsylvania Resource Council is hosting the workshop, which will teach the benefits of composting with worms. Participants will learn how to house, feed, harvest and care for worms.

Winterfest will be held from noon-3 p.m. Feb. 22 in Clearview Common. Tickets are $15 to sample lots of chilli from local restaurants. There will be a grudge cookoff between the Mt. Lebanon fire and police departments and also invited to participate in the cookoff this year is the Medical Rescue Team South. Tickets will be available soon.

The annual Taste of the Township will be held from 7-11 p.m. April 25 at Valley Brook Country Club. Tickets are $50 and are now available at the Peters Township Public Library’s circulation desk. Proceeds benefit the library.

The township was named as the fourth safest city in the state. In 2011, there were no robberies or murders reported in the township.

UPMC’s Natasha Milijkovic will discuss why older adults are more prone to falls at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at Strabane Trails Village. The seminar is free and open to the public. Milijkovic will detail the changes brought on by aging, what kind of injuries happen and the risk factors for falling.

• At 2:30 p.m. Feb. 27, the River City Brass Band will perform at Strabane Trails Village. The event is free and open to the public at Strabane Trails Village, 317 Wellness Way.

Christmas tree recycling continues to Jan. 27. Take the trees, without decorations, to the YMCA upper parking lot where the tree will be ground for mulch for residents’ use.
