Off The Wall Theater continues the Year and Season of the Female Playwright with Kim El’s autobiographical play “Straightening Combs.” Directed by Linda Haston and written and performed by Kim El and featuring Nia Washington, “Straightening Combs” is a story of the repercussions of low self-esteem and overcoming depression in urban America through spoken word poetry, songs and short vignettes. Kim El takes the audience on an intimate life journey as seen through the eyes of an African-American female coming of age in Pittsburgh’s Hill District.

“Straightening Combs” is the first play in Off The Wall’s newest adventure, Repertory Theater.

Repertory Theater is a type of theatrical presentation in which several works are presented regularly or in alternate sequence in one season.

Performances are 8 p.m. Jan. 31, Feb. 1, April 4 and 5, Aug. 8 and 9; and 3 p.m. Feb. 2, April 6 and Aug. 10.

The Hollywood Theater, Dormont, announces its offerings for January:

• “Blue Velvet” (1986), a sensual mystery thriller about strange happenings in a small North Carolina town, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. On Friday, the screening will begin with a free organ concert at 6:30 by Dale Abraham of Rhythm Sweet and Hot.

• “Groundhog Day” (1993) with Bill Murray is the Family Movie Matinee that screens at 1 p.m. Feb. 1 (all seats $3) and again that same day at 4 p.m. (all seats $5). Screenings are currently being scheduled for Feb. 2. Check the Hollywood website for times and details.

Hollywood’s Previews Series allows Pittsburgh audiences to catch new movies before their New York and Los Angeles theatrical openings. These movies show only once. Audiences can sign up for the Gathr movies at gathr.us/series/dormont-previews. A gathr membership costs $19/month or $49/three months, which saves members several dollars off the regular box office price. Tickets also will be available at the door for $7. Shows include:

• “12 O’Clock Boys,” 7:30 p.m. Jan. 30. This documentary that tells the tale of a notorious urban dirt bike pack in Baltimore.

Wedding Extravaganza featuring Monte Durham of “Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta” will take place Feb. 9 in the David L. Lawrence Convention Center’s Spirit of Pittsburgh ballroom.

The event will begin with a couture, runway-style fashion show. More than 100 of Pittsburgh’s best wedding professionals will be on hand, and Duram will be available for pictures and autographs. There will also be prizes.

At the end of the event, Durham will showcase his true expertise, “Jacked Up” with Monte!

It’s early, but tickets go quickly for the All Oldies, Only Oldies dance set for April 5 in the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department’s community social center. This year’s special guest will be Rich Engler, longtime concert promoter and the first inductee in the Pittsburgh Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Engler will present a pre-dance program at 7:30 p.m. and will then be available for autographs and pictures. Copies of his autobiography, “Behind the Stage Door: A Promoter’s Life Behind the Scenes,” will be available for sale, cash or credit card. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Cancer Caring Center.

The dance will run from 8 p.m.-midnight and tickets are $10 per person. Tables of eight or more are available. The event is BYOE- Bring Your Own Everything. The fire department will provide free refreshments, but not soft drinks.

Memorabilia from Engler’s career will be on display and will include classic guitars from The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Everly Brothers, Bo Diddley, Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Bon Jovi, James Brown and Smokey Robinson.
