Stout shines
Kellan Stout of Mt. Lebanon rolled up a 9-0 record and captured first team honors at the Disney Duals. The nation’s No. 89 wrestling recruit is a rising senior at Mt. Lebanon High School.
During the duals, he posted six wins against high quality opponents, including a pair of major decisions over two-time Ohio state runner-up Armani Robinson from Greeneview, and Super 32 and FloNationals placewinner Derek Hillman from Woodhaven, Mich. Stout also scored decisions against two-time Ohio state third-place finisher Alec Schenk of Perry, N.C., state champion and NHSCA al-American Malik McDonald from South View, Drew Phipps of Norwin, and New York state placewinner David Hamil of Deer Park.
Stout is the winningest wrestler Mt. Lebanon history with over 100 career victories. A PIAA state runner-up, he is a two-time Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association’s state all-academic team member, maintaining a 3.9 QPA. He was a Southwest Regional and WPIAL runner-up this winter.
Snyder leads Bearcats
Molly Snyder of Mt. Lebanon capped a strong season of lacrosse at St. Vincent by capturing Presidents’ Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors.
Snyder scored 37 goals, assisted 58 tallies and picked up 23 ground balls in leading the Bearcats to the PAC title. The Bearcats topped Thiel, 18-14, in the championship match.
An honor roll student, Snyder led the conference in scoring. She ranked third in points per game in NCAA Division III women’s lacrosse. Additionally, she was 25th for total points.
Scoring has always been a part of the rising senior’s repertoire. As a freshman, she started 10 games and registered nine goals to go along with five assists and 22 ground balls. She ranked fourth on the squad as a sophomore with 28 shots. She also racked up 38 ground balls and 25 draw contests.
The daughter of Jeff and Jaclyn Snyder is an English education major.
Golfers qualify
Several area golfers qualified for the 110th PNC West Penn Open Championships being held this week at the Indiana Country Club.
Grant Engel, who won the 2013 PIAA title, and Tim Novic led the way. The former Upper St. Clair teammates tied for third place in the sectional qualifier held at Lone Pine Country Club. Both fired 1-under scores on the Par 72, 6,583-yard course.
Garrett Browning of Coraopolis earned medalist honors with a 31-36–67 while James Michael Gillam followed in second place with a 70.
Bridgeville residents Steve Markovitz and Evan Lestini also qualified along with Tyler Pollack from Venetia. Markovitz and Pollack both carded a 76 while Lestini scored a 77.
Bethel Park’s Brett Young and Canonsburg’s Casey O’Korn just missed the cut.
All-state for C-M
Four members of the Canon-McMillan softball team garnered all-state honors recently. They were Olivia Lorusso, Linda Rush, Giorgiana Zeremenko and Abby McCartney.
A third baseman, Lorusso had the best slugging percentage (1.285) in the state as well as 16 homers and 46 RBI. Bound for Robert Morris University this fall, she had 41 extra base hits in her 77 at bats.
Another Robert Morris recruit, McCartney is a rising senior. She clubbed 12 homers and drove in 45 runs. She batted .575 with a 1.191 slugging percentage, thanks to an additional five doubles and two triples. She scored 36 runs.
A rising junior, Rush committed no errors at shortstop and had 35 putouts. She batted. 575 with 12 roundtrippers and 45 RBI.
A recent graduate, Zeremenko batted .438 with five homers and 24 RBI. The Pitt recruit committed no errors behind the plate and was rated the best defensive catcher in the WPIAL.
Quinlisk top coach
Bethel Park native Heather Quinlisk was named NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year for women’s lacrosse.
The Loyola University club coach guided the Greyhounds to their second appearance in the national championship tournament and a No. 3 ranking in the nation. In two seasons at the helm, she coached seven, first-team all-Americans and three, second-team members as well as a Goalie of the Year.
When she is not coaching at Loyola, Quinlisk serves as the membership program coordinator for US Lacrosse in Baltimore. Plus, she coaches the Elite Lacrosse Club’s 2016 Orange team.
Quinlisk played lacrosse at Bethel Park and Waynesburg University, where she served as a team captain.
Lazur earns honor
Victoria Lazur of Upper St. Clair earned all-America honors from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. The organization recognizes outstanding performances of rowers and coxswains on the national level in women’s rowing.
A coxswain for Ohio State University, Lazur netted first-team laurels. The daughter of Mark and Maria Lazur steered the Buckeyes to their second consecutive NCAA rowing title. She piloted the first varsity eight to victory. The win capped a perfect season for Lazur’s boat as the crew finished 12-0.
A three-year OSU scholar-athlete, Lazur has already been granted admission to the school’s prestigious John Glenn School of Public Affairs Master of Public Administration program.
She began her rowing carrier in high school as the coxswain at USC, where she captained her crew to several first-place finishes. Lazur also ran cross country in high school.
