Helmet giveaway
The Allegheny County Parks Department is hosting a free Hard Heads Helmet Fitting event for kids on July 24 at the 3B Action Park next to the wave pool in Boyce Park. Those 17 and under are invited to receive one of the 100 helmets that will be given out to those who attend. The free helmets are paid for by Kohl’s and Children’s Hospital. The helmets can be used for riding bikes, scooters, skateboards or rollerblades and skates.
According to Children’s Hospital, only 29 percent of children admitted for head injuries wore bike helmets at the time of the injury. Hospital officials say more than 85 percent of head injuries can be avoided just by wearing a helmet.
In addition to the helmet fitting and giveaway, Boyce Park will host a free showing of the “The Lego Movie” starting at 8:30 p.m. The wave pool will also remain open until 8 p.m.
