Athletic training workshop open to students

2 min read

High school students interested in pursuing a sports medicine career or enhancing their athletic training-room skills can attend the 17th annual Student Athletic Training Aide Workshop from July 29-31 at The Ellis School, 6425 Fifth Ave., Shadyside.

The three-day workshop, hosted by UPMC Sports Medicine, is designed for high school students to learn the basic skills and knowledge necessary for careers in sports medicine. The workshop will expose students to key areas of sports medicine through lectures and practice in athletic training techniques and procedures.

An extensive amount of lab time will focus on skills that students can use in their scholastic athletic training environments. Students will learn how to prepare for an athletic training program in college. They also will have the option to receive instruction in American Heart Association adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The workshop will include information and training on concussions in sports and the role of a high school athletic trainer aide.

“Surveys show that rehabilitation and physical therapy fields are expected to grow over the next decade, and we’re excited to give high school students more experience in those areas,” said coordinator Amanda M. Miller, A.T.C., a certified athletic trainer at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine.

“For a high school student wanting a better understanding and knowledge of the athletic training profession, it’s hard to imagine a better form of education than this student athletic training workshop. Students over the years have told us how the workshop has been a valuable learning tool for anyone interested in athletic training or sports medicine.”

The fee for the program is $55 if paid by July 8, then $65 from July 9-14. The cost includes course and lab materials, breakfast and lunch, plus a T-shirt. The optional CPR and AED certifications cost an additional $10. Supervising certified athletic trainers can accompany students at no charge. Parking is free. Space is limited.
