Young leads list of local qualifiers
Brett Young of Bethel Park led a host of local duffers into the 114th West Penn Championships held earlier this week (June 16-17) at Penn State.
Young shot a one-under-par 70 and tied Daniel Woods of Moon for first place at the sectional qualifier held on the 6,310-yard course at Scenic Valley in Finleyville.
Brody Taylor, also from Bethel Park, and Jake Sollon from Venetia finished tied for fourth with two others. Both carded 72 scores.
Chuck Nettles from McMurray and Alec Stopperich from Venetia followed with 73s while Brian DePaul of Bridgeville shot a 74. Corey Long from South Fayette and Sean Edgar from Bethel Park both made the cut with 75 scores.
Bridgeville’s Evan Lestini and Jim Markovitz, as well as Tanner Johnson, just missed qualifying. Lestini shot a 76 while Markovitz and Johnson finished with 77s.
During a sectional qualifier held on the par 72 course at The Country Club of Meadville, Ben DuCarme of McMurray shot a 73 and tied with two others for runner-up honors.
James Lasher of Edinboro captured medalist honors with a 68.
In other golf news, James Augustine of Venetia finished tied for third place in the 15th West Penn Amateur Public Links Championships. He posted a 68-75-143 during the two-day event, hosted by the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association, and played on the par 70, 6,558-yard course at the Olde Stonewall Golf Club in Ellwood City.
Jimmy Ellis (149), Lestini (152), Tim Bowers (153), Robert J. Cimarolli (154) and Johnson (164) were among some of the other local participants to shoot well in the finals.
