Brookline Regional wins title
Brookline Regional Catholic School captured the Pittsburgh Class B Diocesan girls’ junior varsity basketball title by defeating Assumption, 28-22, in the championship game.
In addition, BRC, which was formed in 1996 through a merger of St. Pius X, Resurrection and Our Lady of Loreto, completed its first undefeated season (20-0) in school history.
After a first-round bye, BRC beat Our Lady of Fatima, 49-35, in the quarterfinals and St. James of Sewickley, 38-34, in the semifinals to reach the title tilt.
BRC also swept its league opponents St. Anne’s, Madonna Regional Catholic, JFK, Holy Child and St. Sylvester to capture a section banner. In addition, BRC posted non-section victories against Holy Trinity, St. Bernard’s in Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park, West Mifflin and St. Gabriel, and St. Bonaventure, which eventually won the Class A championship.
Members of the team included: Vanessa Hudson, Sarah Merlina, Alexia Bernotas, Gianna Facchiano, Emily Meador, Maggie Wilson, Amanda Santora, Sydney Carr, Maleah Neiport, Kendal Kalanich and Samantha Chatham.
Ian Barrett and Mark Bernotas coached the club. Both were former Seton-La Salle standouts. Barrett played on Johnny Lee’s 1990 and 91 WPIAL runner-up teams while Bernotas scored 1,000 points and helped the Rebels win a WPIAL championship.
