Bethel Park incident resolved peacefully
Bethel Park police received a call at about 7:30 p.m. May 1, that a young man living on Clarene Drive, was despondent and may have a firearm, said police Chief John Mackey. Police made voice contact with the man and convinced him to throw a gun out through a window.
However, police did not know if there were other weapons in the house, and when there was an indication the young man, whose name was not released, was attempting to barricade himself in the house, members of the South Hills Area Council of Governments’ (SHAGOC) specially trained team were asked to respond at about 8 p.m., Mackey said. When members of the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) arrived, negotiators were able to convince the man, believed to be in his mid-to-late 20s, to come outside where he was taken in to custody, Mackey said.
The man was transported to a Pittsburgh hospital for evaluation. No one was injured.
Mackey said the incident was “resolved in a peaceful manner” in less than three hours, and he does not believe any criminal charges will be filed.
