Calling it a win for a growing number of small businesses statewide, Sen. Matt Smith (D-Allegheny/Washington) lauded the Senate’s unanimous passage of Senate Bill 997, which would legalize pedal-assist electric bicycles in the state vehicle code. Smith’s bill defines pedal-assist electric bicycles as bicycles equipped with operable pedals, an electric motor 750 watts (1 horsepower) or less, weighing 100 pounds or less, and capable of a maximum speed of not more than 20 mph. The legislation also requires that the rider be at least 16 years of age. Smith insists that they are first and foremost a bicycle, not a form of motorized scooter. The small electric motor offers an assist to riders. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.

A new articulation agreement between La Roche College and the University of Pittsburgh will allow students to earn a degree from both institutions.
Under the new agreement, students who attend La Roche for three years will complete pre-engineering requirements and at least 75 percent of a La Roche major. Effective immediately, the agreement is available to both current and prospective students.
After fulfilling all requirements at La Roche, students are automatically accepted to the University of Pittsburgh. Students will earn an engineering degree in one of the following concentrations: bioengineering, chemical, computer, electrical, industrial and engineering science with an emphasis in nanotechnology. This portion of the program generally takes two years to complete but varies depending on course rotations.
Students will transfer University of Pittsburgh coursework to complete their degree at La Roche.
In addition to the new engineering agreement, La Roche holds health science agreements with Duquesne University, and also finalized a recent agreement with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.
