Four Mt. Lebanon grapplers were named to the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association’s (PWCA) All-Academic team.
Kevin Kinyua, Sean Perri, Sam White and Kellan Stout were chosen based on a combination of athletic and academic successes. They must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and .600 winning percentage on the mat throughout the season. Each gained honorable mention status.
“We are very proud of everything they have done on the mat for us this year,” said Lebo wrestling coach Bill Lewis, “but we are also equally proud of their ability to balance a demanding schedule of athletics and academics.”
A senior, Kinyua is a three-time PWCA awardee while Stout, Perri and White are two-time selections.
Kinyua finished his career as a four-year letterwinner, section champion, three-time WPIAL qualifier and PIAA qualifier. He finished 30-7 overall this past season. In addition he was a two-time Junior National qualifier in Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.
Kinyua will continue wrestling at Mercyhurst. The Lakers finished 18-1 and sent six wrestlers to the NCAA Division II championships.
Stout is completing his junior year as the all-time winningest grappler in Lebo history, eclipsing Kurt Angle’s record. An Almanac Athlete of the Year finalist, he earned his 100th career victory during the state semifinals. He finished at the PIAA runner-up and with a 36-4 record in 2014. Stout also earned silver medals at the district and regional level.
After a runner-up finish at Powerade, he won the Allegheny County championships.
A two-sport standout, who helped Lebo reach the WPIAL finals in lacrosse the past two years, White posted over 24 wins and qualified for the WPIAL championships for the second time last winter.
A three-year letterwinner and Almanac all-star, White was recognized as the wrestling representative for the Honor the Game Award, which is based on character and sportsmanship.
Another Almanac all-star and three-year letterwinner, Perri qualified for the WPIAL championships for the third time. Perri, like White, placed fourth in the Allegheny County championship. He won 26 matches last winter. He is also a past Junior National qualifier for Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.
“As a coach, these guys represent what we strive to be all about,” said Lewis. “They have developed a hard work ethic not only in the mat room but also in the classroom. They are great role models for our younger guys and epitomize what our program is all about. They represent Mt. Lebanon Wrestling with class and pride. We couldn’t be more proud of each of them.”
