Charlotte Madson of Upper St. Clair grabbed the bronze medal during the PIAA singles tennis tournament held at the Hershey Racquet Club in Hershy, Pa. The junior netter defeated Meredith Lee from Owen J. Roberts in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to win the consolation match and place third in the tournament.

Madson met her match in the semifinals. She lost to Anna Li, 6-2, 6-3. A North Allegheny sophomore, Li lost to Ananya Dua from Shady Side Academy, 6-1, 6-1, in the PIAA championship match.

Madson advanced to the Final Four round of competition with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Nin DeLuna from Wissachickon in the quarterfinals. Madson opened tournament play with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep against Swata Alagar from Obama Academy.

Madson entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed out of District 7. She finished runner-up to Dua in the WPIAL championships, dropping a two-setter, 6-3, 7-5, in that final.

Dua is likely to battle Madson again next year as she, too, is a junior.

The WPIAL also will return the state champions in doubles as NA claimed the title with Tina Li and Eugenia Lee. Li, a sophomore, and Lee, a freshman, won the PIAA final, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, against Fox Chapel’s Amand Nord and Laurel Shymanski. Li and Lee were runners-up to Nord and Shymanski in the District 7 finals.
