Giant Oaks Garden Club holds tinsel Time Luncheon
Local residents were able to get a jump on their holiday shopping while benefitting several charitable organizations during the Giant Oaks Garden Club’s annual fundraising event, The Tinsel Time Luncheon.
Held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Southpointe on Nov. 7, the event included raffle baskets and door prizes, a luncheon and a floral design program, as well as numerous vendors featuring a variety of gift items. In addition to jewelry, clothing and seasonal items, the “Sweet Boutique” featured homemade treats for sale.
This was the 42nd year for the fundraising event, which gets bigger every year according to Lorrie Wolstoncroft, who chaired the Tinsel Time Luncheon with Cathy Rager. “When we started, we were in one ballroom, now we’re in three,” Wolstoncroft said. “It’s always a sell out.”
Last year, the Tinsel Time Luncheon raised more than $15,000 for charity, money that went to various organizations, including Canonsburg Lake Restoration, Regional Environment Education Center, Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, Peters Creek Historical Society, Peters Township Public Library, Phipps Conservatory, Washington Children’s Garden, Wesley Spectrum Service Greenhouse Kids Program,
Peters Township Meals On Wheels, Bower Hill Elementary School Garden Project and two $1,000 college scholarships.
Wolstoncroft explained that the Giant Oaks Garden Club, which has been in existence for over 50 years, is a working garden club that tends to several area gardens. The club meets monthly in Peters Township and has more than 70 members.
