Polar vortex headed to region this week
It’s time to take out the winter coats. Meteorologists say a polar vortex will hit the central and eastern states this week, impacting the region by Wednesday.
Accuweather meteorologist Tim Kines said the vortex will bring highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s, along with blustery winds and a chance of snow. Typical November temperatures are in the 40s.
“With that colder weather, there may be some snow showers to contend with, too,” he said.
The worst part of the temperature change will be when the cold air blows in, probably Tuesday or Wednesday night.
The cold air is caused by a polar vortex dislodging, sending arctic air south.
“When the jet stream is north of you, you tend to be in a milder weather pattern,” he said.
This week, the jet stream will push south, bringing Canada’s weather here. A strong storm in Canada will push the vortex down.
“That’s going to help propel the cold air southward and give it a push,” he said.
But the colder weather is temporary, and he does not expect this to be the beginning of winter weather – yet.
“I don’t think we’re likely to deep freeze for weeks and weeks,” he said. “The temperatures will rebound to where they should be.”
