Dee Briggs opens solo exhibit at Mine Factory
Through Nov. 28
Art exhibit at The Mine Factory
Artist and Western Pennsylvania native Dee Briggs has opened her most recent show at the Mine Factory entitled “The Perception of Value,” which combines her sculpture with photography and a series of curated objets trouvé from an ongoing parallel project known as “The House of Gold.” In addition to featuring Briggs’ characteristic steel sculptures that celebrate abstract form on a large-scale, in this outing she has displayed pieces from a house she owns that is slated for demolition.
Interspersed amongst her sculptures and lining the gallery walls are remnants from the House of Gold, ubiquitous pieces of American residential architecture from a bygone era, rendered both familiar and unrecognizable in their detached state: a 139-year old eave bracket painted gold; a line of four frames, each with a nail in the center of the canvas; the living room door frame removed from the house – original nails intact – and re-nailed to the gallery wall.
Additionally, Briggs is showing photography for the first time – a series of nine images from various stages of the House of Gold project and one sculpture related to the house – a 1/16th scale replica of the house made of a stainless steel bronze composite and plated in 24K gold.
The exhibit runs until Nov. 28. An artist talk will take place in the space at 7 p.m. Nov. 14. A closing reception is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Nov. 28.
Briggs currently splits her time between Pittsburgh and New York. To learn more about the artist, visit www.deebriggsstudio.com.
