Peters Township edged Great Valley, 2-1, at Hersheypark Stadium and captured the PIAA Class AAA men’s soccer championship.

The title was the fourth for the Indians in school history and first since 2007 when they defeated Downingtown West, 2-1, in overtime. Peters Township won back-to-back titles in 1988 and 1989. The Indians also competed in the 1998 and 2008 finals.

With the win, the Indians finished the season 22-2 overall, their lone losses to Upper St. Clair, the two-time state winner prior to Peters Township. The Indians avenged those losses in the WPIAL District 7 championship match.

With the loss, the Patriots finished their season at 19-6-2 overall.

After a scoreless first half, the Mastrangelo twins orchestrated an offensive attack that resulted in two goals less than five minutes apart. Nicco fired in the first tally while Marrio followed with the second score with 18:40 to play. Each assisted the other.

Mike Carrigan prevented Josh Deyarmin and the Peters Township defense from recording the shutout.

Earlier, Canon-McMillan failed in its attempt to capture the first state soccer title in school history when the Lady Macs lost a heartbreaker in overtime, 2-1, to Central Bucks West.

Thirty-two seconds into the PIAA Class AAA girls’ final, Sabrina Bryan scored, lifting the Lady Macs into a lead it held for the next 73 minutes. Shaw McCarty netted the equalizer for the Bucks at the 74:10 mark.

In overtime, Jillian Nolan clinched the title for the Bucks, their eighth in school history, with a goal in the 91st minute.

With the loss, Canon-Mac finished the year at 19-5-1. The Lady Macs were WPIAL District 7 runners-up.
