Thank you, patriotic teens
I want to thank the students of Peters Township for supporting our veterans and troops with their wonderful displays in McMurray, which I passed on my way to work. My 30-year-old brother currently serves on active duty in the U.S. Army and has completed two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. My family worries about his safety daily, and it certainly helps to know that local people appreciate his service and the sacrifices made by all who serve.
I was surprised to read about the controversy surrounding the displays, as I thought they were great. I know I represent just one military family, but I bet those teens meant no more disrespect for our flag, than the “unlit” flags placed this week by families and veterans on the more than 4,000 graves of those service men and women who died in our 13-year campaign against terrorism.
Peters Township is lucky to have teens that care, and I hope other South Hills communities follow their lead and honor our veterans and troops in similar fashion next Veterans Day. Peters Township officials shouldn’t worry about their patriotic teens; they should only begin to worry when they have none.
