College fair

More than 140 colleges and universities will participate in the North Pittsburgh College Fair, 6-8 p.m. Oct. 6 at La Roche College’s Kerr Fitness & Sports Center in the North Hills. For a complete list of participating institutions, visit laroche.edu.

PT AP Scholars

Peters Township High School students continue to receive national recognition for their outstanding performance on the Advanced Placement exams, with 140 students earning AP Scholar Awards for their performance in 2014.

Seventeen students have qualified for the prestigious National AP Scholar Award by earning an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. These students are: Alyssa Aburachis, Sean Boyles, Jennifer Cashman, Ian Dickey, Matthew Gummersbach, Suhas Hoysala, John Hussey, Sebastian Hymson, Maxwell Lindsay, Anthony Lioon, Aaron Ranallo, Nicholas Roberts, Matthew Stablein, Isabelle Stasenko, Shane Taylor, Roy Wang and Keenan Witmer.

Open house

Jubilee Christian School, an inter-denominational school for grades K-8 with campuses in Mt. Lebanon and Dormont, will hold an open house at 10 a.m. Oct. 16. Parents and prospective students are invited to attend a brief informational session at the Mt. Lebanon campus, after which they may meet with the school’s principal and tour school facilities, including the new Dormont campus.

Jubilee has begun accepting applications for the 2015-2016 school year. In addition, the school currently has openings in several grades for students who wish to transfer from public, private or home-school settings for the 2014-2015 school year.

Dyslexia program

The Pennsylvania Branch of the International Dyslexia Association will present “What’s Next After High School? Preparation and Planning for High School Students with Dyslexia and their Families” from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 18 at Allegheny Intermediate Unit at The Waterfront, Homestead.

Learn what comes next with the help of current college students, college disability services personnel, and by parents who have been through the process. Cost is $10 for the first family member and $5 for each additional family member.

Scholarship

contest

Western Pennsylvania high school seniors are encouraged to enter the 9th Annual “Words to be Heard” Scholarship Contest sponsored by Edgar Snyder & Associates.

Seniors are asked to create programs via video, PowerPoint, brochures, websites, essays or another approach that will prevent their peers from underage drinking, drunk driving or distracted driving.

Awards include one grand prize scholarship of $10,000, a second place scholarship of $3,000, and a third place scholarship of $2,500.

High schools seniors entering the contest must plan to attend a four-year college or university in the summer or fall of 2015. All submissions must be postmarked on or before March 27, 2015, to be eligible.
