Civil War mourning customs explored

The Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall continues its Second Saturday Civil War Series with its second installment on Oct. 11 when presenters Judi Hendrickson and Jeanne Finstein discuss “19th Century Mourning Customs.”

In addition to numerous epidemics of the 19th century, the Civil War caused death on a massive scale, leaving Americans struggling to deal with identifying, preserving and burying so many dead. Loss became common place; death took on new meaning changing our culture of bereavement.

“Mourning Practices in the 19th Century” will take place at 1 p.m. in the ACFL&MH’s Reception Hall, which is adjacent to the Espy Post. The Espy Post and the Second Saturday Civil War Series are free and open to the public.
