C-M stuns USC; but Panthers recover to clinch section title
After Peters Township and Upper St. Clair battled to a 1-1 draw, Pat Vereb said girls’ soccer in the WPIAL is wide open. Canon-McMillan proved him right as the Lady Macs stunned the Lady Panthers in follow-up action. In the victory, Allie Thomas and Cheyenne Trest scored for the Lady Macs, who also benefited from an own goal.
Despite the defeat, USC rebounded and blanked Taylor Allderdice, 6-0, on Oct. 6 to clinch the Section 5-AAA title. With a visit to Mt. Lebanon remaining tonight (Oct. 8), the Lady Panthers were 10-0-1 in the division.
McKenzie Shaffer (2), Emma Hasco, Maddie Rocks, Julia de la Parra and Bailey Mielcusny scored the goals for USC, which improved to 11-1-4 overall.
Meanwhile, the Lady Macs look to host Peters Township at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8. They edged Moon, 1-0, on Oct. 6 to move into a tie for second place in Section 4-AAA. Both the Lady Macs and Tigers were 9-2 in the league and trailed Peters Township. C-M improved to 14-2-0 overall.
Against the Tigers, Trest scored the game-winning goal. Allison Oddi assisted.
The Lady Indians have won three straight since tying USC. They blanked Mt. Lebanon, 2-0, and Trinity, 12-0, and defeated West Allegheny, 6-1, to improve to 12-1-1 overall and 9-1 in Section 4-AAA.
In the win against the Lebo ladies, Maddi Santo and Erin Helbig each scored goals. Laurel Carpenter had an assist. Reilly McGlumphy recorded her ninth shutout in goal, and recorded one save.
Against the Hillers, Santo exploded for four tallies while Mariah Vucich provided two tallies. Breeanne Latsko, Carly Johns, Devon Rectenwald, Emily Cottrill and Helbig each had a goal. McGlumphy and Ava Falcione combined in goal for the shutout.
Against West-A, Santo scored twice while Johns, Helbig, Vucich and Cottrill provided single tallies. Johns and Caitlyn Pendergast garnered assists. McGlumphy and Falcione again combined in goal for the win.
Boys’ action
Canon-McMillan edged Moon, 2-1, overtime to punch its ticket to the playoffs. Jake Trainor and Josh Kruczek provide the goals, with Kruczek netting the gamewinner.
In a 2-1 loss to Upper St. Clair, Nicco Mastrangelo scored for Peters Township. The Panthers had taken the lead on a first-half goal by Robbie Mertz in the 35th minute before Mastrangelo netted the equalizer with 21:20 to play in the second half. Garrett Blake fired in the decisive goal with under three minutes to play.
