Upper St. Clair’s Coughlin nets two honors

Pete Coughlin of Upper St. Clair tied a school record with six touchdown passes in Washington & Jefferson College’s 51-28 victory against Thomas More in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action. The sophomore signal caller also threw for 383 yards, the highest passing total in the league this season.

The performance netted Coughlin Presidents’ Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. He was also named the Corvais ECAC Division III Southwest Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

His TD record has been accomplished five times prior, most recently three times in 2007 by W&J Hall of Famer and former All-America Bobby Swallow. Plus, Coughlin’s yardages is the highest single-game total at W&J since Swallow threw for 391 against Frostburg State (Md.) in 2008.

This season, Coughlin owns the two highest single-game passing totals to date (383, 333 vs. Carnegie Mellon) and leads the league in total offense per game by 76.8 yards at 332.0 yards per game. In four games this season, all victories, Coughlin has completed 93 of 133 passes for 1,177 yards and 13 touchdowns. He ranks as the team’s second-leading rusher with 151 yards and one touchdown on 50 carries.

The son of Chris and Beth Coughlin was a standout quarterback at Upper St. Clair High School, where he also excelled in basketball. As a senior, he connected on 82 of 121 passes for 1,331 yards and 18 touchdowns. Additionally, he rolled up 545 yards rushing and nine more scores to finish with 27 TDs. He earned Almanac MVP honors for that 2012 season and was also an Almanac Athlete of the Year finalists.
