Once again, the Scott Conservancy is sponsoring a community education program for the general public as Allegheny County Penn State Master Gardeners will present “Frugal Gardening: Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.”

Many people are looking for ways to save money, while others are looking for ways to live more ecologically-friendly lives. This class will teach a host of frugal gardening tips by incorporating the three Rs into your garden. Ways to reduce cost and save time by following the yearly garden calendar will be discussed.

Frugal gardening presenter Gerri Barnes said that the program will focus on making the most of what is available.

It’s a lot of common sense, said Barnes, but covers the basics of good gardening practice, along with a few “out of the ordinary” ideas.

Composting is a frugal way to achieve a fertile soil amendment for the garden, and a home composting bin will be raffled off to a lucky attendee.

Soil test kits will be available for purchase that evening. Free take-home literature will be on hand, covering some general topics of interest such as native plants, organic gardening fundamentals, beneficial insects and winter bird feeding. A special fact sheet about monarch butterflies and milkweed, and a milkweed seed packet, will be distributed.

The adults-only class is scheduled 7-8 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Lodge in Scott Park. The cost to attend is $5 and will be collected at the door.
