Hason Woodson needs two tacklers to drag him down. During Bishop Canevin’s 21-12 loss to Riverside, Woodson rushed for 104 yards and a 3-yard touchdown.

After an easy victory over East Allegheny, 49-6, South Fayette faces a challenge when the feisty Golden Eagles of Keystone Oaks visit the Lions’ lair at 7 p.m. Sept. 5.

In the Century Conference opener, KO took Quaker Valley down to the last second before yielding. With one second to play, Amos Luptak capped the comeback win, 25-19, for the Quakers on a 7-yard rush into the end zone.

Since Luptak also threw two TD passes of 55 and 25 yards, the Golden Eagles may wish to shore up their defense this week as they face the premier passer in Pennsylvania. Brett Brumbaugh set single-season passing records in leading the Lions to a 16-0 season in 2013. He also stands on the cusp of shattering the all-time WPIAL record.

Brumbaugh sliced through the Wildcats’ defense for 185 yards. He completed 13 of 18 attempts with two going for touchdowns to Roman Benson (57 yards) and Logan Sharp (3 yards).

Hunter Hayes leads the Lions’ ground assault. He rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns against East-A. In addition, J.J. Walker notched a 1-yard score.

And, Ryan Schmider picked off a pass and returned the interception 23 yards for another South Fayette score. Hence, Kobe Phillippi will need to be aware of the Lions’ secondary.

Phillippi, who has had back-to-back 1,000-yard passing seasons, threw for 189 yards in the loss to the Quakers. While he completed 16 of his attempts, including a two-yard TD to Leo Palmer that gave KO the lead until Luptak’s heroics, Phillippi did toss two interceptions in the loss. Phillippi, however, is a dual threat. He rushed for two scores of seven and five yards against the Quakers.

An interesting sidelight to the clash between KO and SF is the fact the Golden Eagles are now coached by Greg Perry. He had spent his previous 20 years of coaching at Seton-La Salle. The Rebels and the Lions have a long-standing rivalry in both football and basketball. Plus, Perry coached Brumbaugh’s older brother, Luke. The SLS graduate is now the starting quarterback at Robert Morris University, which is under the coaching direction of John Banaszak, former Pittsburgh Steeler and McMurray resident.

SLS at South Allegheny

Despite a lackluster performance in their season opener, a 19-8 victory against South Park, Seton-La Salle resumes Century Conference action in Glassport as the Rebels visit South Allegheny this Friday.

Danzel McKinley-Lewis helped stake SLS to victory versus the Eagles. He rolled to a 64-yard scored with 5:43 left in the first half. After Chad Murphy recovered a fumble, Danzel McKinley-Lewis hauled in a 4-yard TD strike from Tyler Perone.

Perone also tossed a touchdown of 18 yards to Paris Ford. Rick Mellick set up the score with a 19-yard run. For the game, Perone completed 15 of 25 passes for 121 yards.

Billy Jackson and Quincy Leonard picked off two first-half passes to thwart the Eagles, who had taken a brief lead, 8-6, in the contest after Ty Washington’s 88-yard kickoff return.

Canevin at Union

The Crusaders look to recover from a mistake-plagued loss to Riverside 21-12, when they visit Union in this Sept. 5 non-conference clash. In defeat, Canevin turned the ball over on interceptions and fumbles, resulting in three Riverside touchdowns.

The Crusaders, however, never quit.

Aman Bridges thwarted a Panther drive when he picked off a pass in the end zone. Eighty yards later, Hason Woodson raced three yards for a touchdown. In the predominantly rushing drive, Woodson carried the Crusaders into the end zone. He finished with 104 yards.

After scrambling all over the field, Reed Relosky hooked up with Austin Scott for a 22-yard TD with 4:17 remaining in the game. In the game, Relosky’s primary target proved to be Dom Palmosina. He had five receptions for 52 yards.

CV at West Allegheny

Niel Loebig acknowledged at the start of the season that West Allegheny, the defending WPIAL champion, would be the team to beat in the Parkway Conference but after his Colts upended Hopewell, 27-21, in their season opener, he will have Chartiers Valley ready for this visit to Imperial on Sept. 5.

Jake Collins engineered the triumph. He completed five aerials for 129 yards. He tossed a 49-yard TD strike to James Pachia and rushed for another score on a 5-yard run. Domini Pocci otherwise dominated the ground game. He scored twice on rushes of 30 and 28 yards in the decisive fourth quarter. Pocci finished with 99 yards on five carries.

C-H at North Catholic

Chartiers-Houston looks to rebound from an opening loss to Avonworth, 37-13, bit it won’t be easy. The Buccaneers visit defending state champion Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic. The Trojans dropped Northgate, 63-19, in their season-opener.

The Trojans feature the 1-2 punch of Jerome Turner and Adam Sharlow. Turner rushed for 136 yards against the Flames and Sharlow completed eight passes for 64 yards and one score.

Meanwhile, the Bucs stayed close to the Antelopes for a half but game up three straight TDs in their opening defeat. In the loss, Alec Ferrari completed 11 passes for 180 yards and a 22-yard TD strike to Austin Warchol. Spencer Terling also rushed for a 6-yard score.
