Caregiver education

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is offering a series of free family caregiver trainings for caregivers of older adults. The series will run once a month at the AAA offices, 2100 Wharton Street, Pittsburgh, second floor. Sessions are held from 10 a.m.-noon. Participants will receive information booklets on all topics covered. Registration is required.

• Sept. 23 – Healthy Eating, Caring for the Caregiver

• Oct. 17 – Legal and Financial Issues, Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia

Adult Interest Center

The Adult Interest Center at Southminster Presbyterian Church, Mt. Lebanon, offers entertainment, information, fellowship and a meal for older adults in the greater South Hills community. Programs, held Fridays September-June, begin at 11 a.m. and are free and open to the public. Lunch is served at noon at a cost of $6. Reservations are not required. On Sept. 26, George Suhon returns to sing and play favorite tunes on guitar and accordion.

Day trip

Mt. Lebanon Recreation Department will hold a day trip on Oct. 3 to the annual Applefest in the Victorian town of Franklin, Pa., for adults 18 and older (Mt. Lebanon residency not required).

The event includes arts and crafts from more than 300 vendors, a farmers market, apple pancake breakfast, free entertainment, beer and wine bar, wagon rides and food to purchase. The bus departs from the Rec Center at 8 a.m. and returns at approximately 7 p.m. There will be plenty of free time to enjoy the festival at your own pace. Festival admission is free. Trip cost is $33/person (transportation only on a deluxe motorcoach – no meals included). Call 412-343-3409 for more information.

Hilltoppers meet

The Hilltoppers of Scott Township will hold its monthly meeting Oct. 8 at Covenant-Community Presbyterian Church, located on Greentree Road. Doors open at 11 a.m. for fellowship. Bring a brown bag lunch to eat at noon. Dessert is provided and beverages are available. After lunch and a brief business meeting, magician Eddie Ace will entertain. Visitors welcome. • Day trip, “A Town Crier Christmas,” Nov. 20. Cost of $99 includes bus transportation to a Dickens Victorian Christmas in Cambridge, Ohio, Dickens souvenir tote bag filled with holiday goodies, Dickens welcome center, riding tour, early evening Christmas dinner at Colonel Taylor Inn, a stop at the Courthouse for a music and light show, and all tips. Bus trip

A free WWII & Korean War Veteran’s Bus Trip to the National Memorials is planned for Oct. 9.

Bus departs from Green Tree at 6 a.m. and returns at approximately 9 p.m. Boxed lunches, dinners and beverages are provided. Wheelchairs available by request. Nurse and helpers on-board. Seating is reserved for veterans only. Family, friends or spouses cannot be accommodated.

Donations are accepted, which enables this trip to be provided at no charge to veterans. Make checks payable to WWII Memorial Vets Trip and mail to: ESB Bank, 701 Corporation St., Beaver, PA 15009, Attn: Paula.

Seniors in the Sukkah

Chabad of the South Hills, Mt. Lebanon, will present Seniors in the Sukkah at noon on Oct. 14. Musical entertainment, sandwiches, shake the lulav and etrog, and raffle prizes. Suggested donation is $5. Wheelchair accessible.

Mature Driver classes

AAA East Central’s Mature Driver renewal classes will be offered 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the South Hills AAA office in Upper St. Clair Oct. 16 and Dec. 9. To enroll, call 412-365-7211.

Fitness classes

Westminster Presbyterian Church, Upper St. Clair, will offer the following Senior Fitness Classes:

• Arthritis Foundation Exercise, 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Tuesdays, through Oct. 21. Cost is $35.

• Tai Chi, 12:15-1:15 p.m. Tuesdays, through Oct. 21. Cost is $35.

• Gentle Yoga, 6-7 p.m. Mondays, through Oct. 20. Cost is $63.

Free home inspections

Trained Safety for Seniors volunteers with Open Your Heart to a Senior will conduct a brief but thorough free home safety assessment using a written checklist making recommendations for family members to adjust/remove potential hazards. They install smoke alarms (if needed) and leave seniors with a bag of safety items, including a flashlight and fresh batteries, a bath mat, night light and other helpful items. After the check has been completed, seniors qualify for either a free grab bar or an indoor railing installed at no charge.
